SM7 Fitting Question

Hey folks. So I went for a wedge fitting at a Titleist Thursday location yesterday as I have been having some doubts about my current Glide 2.0 setup. I play a 50, 54 and 58 right now and will probably stick with that. I spent some time around a short game area with the SM7 54 08M and a 58 08M. I absolutely loved them out of the sand and for chipping. The snag was I was digging a little too much on pitches and full shots.

I guess the obvious answer would be the D grind with 12 bounce for both 54 and 58 (wedge works for the 54). Unfortunately the fitter did not have a 58 D available for testing. I did try a 60 in D and it was better for the fuller swings but to be honest I did not feel like it went through the sand as easily as the 08M.

I am fairly conflicted about which direction to take and could use some input.

For more background, I’m playing reasonably well with my pings but I find I will sometimes get a good deal more or less yardage than expected on approach shots. There is always operator error to consider of course, but there have been genuine WTF moments that are hard to explain. So I started to think that perhaps the distance control from the CB design of the Glide 2.0 is not all I would hope for, and perhaps the SM7 could help tighten things up. Any logic in that or am I just looking to blame something other than myself?

Hey there, I currently have a 58 D grind and I would say to answer these questions first.

1. Which wedge do you do most short game shots with / what is your go-to shot?

2. Say you prefer to use your 58 for most chips/pitches, then can you hit knockdowns with your next wedge up to cover for not being able to hit those full shots.

If both of these then I would say choose the 58 to get in 8M. I did the exact opposite and I regret it because it makes my short game shots a lot harder to hit in my opinion.

Very interesting! I have been thinking about exactly that. My go to club around the green is usually the 58. I will use anything from P to 58 depending on the situation so I guess they are all important, but I definitely lean on the 58 more. That is the only one I will open the face with for example.

Out of the sand again it will usually be the 58 unless I get that dreaded lengthy one, in which case I’ll go to the 54.

The question I need to answer in practice is can I use the 54 for anything outside chipping range. Up to now I have gone to my 58 for anything inside 90. That might not be the right approach.

Ya these are always tough because it's not like a 3 wood for hybrid where if it gaps right then its good cause you have to use them so many different ways.

> I played the 58M and now have 58D. 58 is my go to around the greens. I don’t think I hit the D as crisp around the greens. I’m now considering Hi-Toe but will wait on the Glide 3 and may even wait for SM 8 or look at high bounce M grind.

I'm curious why you switched from the M to D? My testing indicated the same as your experience, i.e. the D worked but didn't feel as good. Was there something that the M was not so good at for you?

As for a high-bounce M grind, isn't that exactly what the D is supposed to be? Or am I misunderstanding something about those grinds ??

I switched on the fitter’s recommendation. You are correct the D is a high bounce M but on the Vokey website you can get a M grind with 10 degrees of bounce. Maybe the best of both? IDK

Ah yes - I had forgotten about that one. Sadly it is not available in the 58, just 60. Might be a very good solution. Fingers crossed they make it more widely available at home point. Maybe even a stock SM8 offering? Probably wishful thinking :-)
