Biloxi course conditions

Just played four rounds in Biloxi and thought I would give course conditions updates for the four courses I played.

6/12 Grand Bear - course in great shape though greens were a little on the slow side

6/13 Shell Landing - glad to see this course in great shape as I played it years ago and it wasn’t good. Greens don’t have a smooth look to them but pitted true and were quick.

6/13 - The Preserve - perfect shape though greens were maybe the firmest I have ever played. They actually held pretty well but are very hard. Green speed is good.

6/14 - Fallen Oak - course just reopened after a few weeks closed for aerification. Tee boxes and fairways were perfect, greens had not fully recovered though should be fantastic in another week or two. Was told at check in the greens were 80-85% recovered, some were and some were not quite to that level. Greens were very soft.

If you had one or two rounds, which ones would you play? Going to be down there in a couple of months.

1. Shell Landing

2. Fallen Oak (have to stay at the Beau Rivage to play)

3. The Preserve

4. Grand Bear

Really can’t go wrong with any of them. I think Shell Landing is just a fantastic course design.

Absolutely agree. Shell Landing was the nice surprise on my last trip to the MS Gulf coast. Since you have to stay at the Beau to get on Fallen Oak (which is terrific!), I’d play Shell Landing and The Preserve.

what are the minimum specific requirements for getting a time at fallen oaks? ... i don't frequent casinos, but would/could for a chance to play fallen oaks this fall ... assume the green fee is in the $300 range or so ...

As of fall 2017 when I was there, you had to stay at the Beau Rivage to play the course. I set up the tee time through the casino player's club desk and it was $149 on a weekday morning with a coupon they had mailed me along with some room offers. I'm guessing the fee varies (or is even comped if you gamble enough) but I'm pretty sure the one constant is that you have to stay at Beau Rivage. It was a great experience that I'm glad I did once, but if I go back to Biloxi I'd probably play Grand Bear again. I liked the layout at Grand Bear better and it was less than $100.

Thanks - I probably wouldn’t have happened onto Shell Landing. We are actually going to be at the Beau Rivage, though, so it sounds like Fallen Oak is worth playing once.

And in response to the question about how to get on Fallen Oak, at the very least the website is pretty emphatic about needing to stay at the Beau Rivage. Not sure if they hold you to that year round, and if so I’m impressed that that business model works on the Mississippi coast.

Were the bugs bad at Shell Landing? The last time I played it, there were some type of small bugs that just drove you crazy.

Used to live in Gulfport. Go play the Oaks in Pass Christian, Winddance CC, and Diamondhead. Great courses which are usually in good conditions. Played the Oaks the most. Great management and hospitality. Best value course by far!

No bugs at Shell Landing when I was there.

Those are called love bugs. They only live for a couple weeks of the year in spring and late summer. They mean no harm just annoying.
