Tried putting like Koepka

Recommended Posts

I tried putting like Brooks today lining up to hit with the toe side of the sweet spot. Drained my first putt for birdie and was in a six inch short or 1' long all day. It let me feel like I could make a more committed stroke and not worry about blasting it by. I couldn't read the break on any longer putts the rest of the day but they all stayed on my line with good speed. Might be a good one day thing but who knows.

I didn't say I wasn't hitting the sweet spot, just the toe side of it. Helps to get rid of the pulls and takes a tiny bit of pace off so I can be aggressive.

Brooks said he feels like he’s hitting high draws with an upward strike, so apply that with slightly open face, like tiger, and bam.

Not everyone putts with the same path back and through, so altering the setup to compensate for their personal, consistent variance is normal. Crenshaw has a pretty big loop in his putting stroke and the head is farther away from him at impact than at address.

Myths abound. They sound good but they’re just not true. The ball doesn’t ride up the clubface, the path isn’t the direction the ball starts, the grass in the rough doesn’t wrap around the hosel.

except he loops it to hit it center... he's not hitting it off the toe

^^ This. He doesn't hit it "toe side sweet spot". Just adjusting for an idiosyncrasy in his stroke that lets him feel the release better. But as they say with putting, whatever gets it in the hole :)

If you have so much control to always hit the toe with a bigger stroke, then why dont make the correct stroke and try to hit the sweetspot.

Wow all, fine Brooks hits the sweet spot dead center every time. I lined up a little different and putted well one day. Maybe it helped me do the same or maybe I just got lucky with speed control one day. Sorry I said anything.

I wouldn't get discouraged -- it's the internet.

Do what works for you. I started putting a lot better when I gave up trying to groove a perfect stroke. I always used to have a tendency to pull the ball -- putting mirrors, gating drills, etc never seemed to help. Then I went for a putter fitting and found out that I was aiming my putter left of the target and cutting across the ball. My putter face would also open up a bit, making it more square to my intended line. Based on my "natural" stroke, the fitter suggested some putters for me and I ended up getting fit with one that I could actually aim inside the cup and keep a more consistent face angle between address and impact. Plus my tendency to cut across was reduced, but it's still there.

After doing a lot of practice with putting the ball down a metal ruler, I found that I am more likely to start the putt on line if I address it slightly towards the heel and try to hit the sweet spot (pretty much the exact opposite of Brooks). The funny thing is that even if I address the ball in the sweet spot and try to hit it, I still have a tendency to impact it closer to the toe. If I address it closer to the toe and try to hit the sweet spot, I have a tendency to push a lot of putts. I've verified all of this with impact tape as well, so it's not just a feel thing. Since I'm hitting the sweet spot more consistently, I'm also blowing a lot more putts by the hole. I just need to practice my touch a bit more to account for it since the ball is coming off the face at a higher speed.

Based on my own experience, I'm guessing that your thought of addressing and hitting the ball closer to the toe is (a) triggering something subconcious to square up the face -- I suppose if you have a tendency to pull putts, hitting it towards the toe will help to counter act that -- and (b) hitting just outside of the sweet spot slows the ball down enough to the point that it matches more closely to your expectation of how fast the ball should be coming off of the putter face.

Don't let them bother you @mbarnocki. There is always someone here who feels the need to rain on every parade.

One of the guys I play with in league every week announced he was trying the same thing today. He had his best ever first 9 shooting -2 (as an 11 hdcp) draining par saving putts from all over the place. He was convinced this new technique was going to take him to new heights. Predictably his handicap somewhat caught up with him on the back 9 but he's still excited to keep at it.

This works wonders for me in terms of centering every putt on the sweet spot. I was a decent putter before 1.7 average putts per round, but since I implemented the change my average has dropped to 1.6 putts per round over my last 6 rounds.

I approach it a little bit more extreme. I align the putt off the center of the club face. Once I am good with my line I move the ball in line with the toe. The loop in my stroke takes it back to dead center with a square face. It’s been wonderful for the confidence knowing anything within 6 feet of the cup is automatic.

My father putts lined up with the ball near the toe. When he actually follow's through, he hits the center of the club face. What ever works for you.
