Graphite vs Steel Shaft technologies

Noticing that every week there seems to be a new graphite/wood shaft someone is marketing. Graphite Designs is using every dang letter of the alphabet and they're chart for all the different stiffness profiles is a bit ridiculous! But then you go on every pro's WITB and its X100s.

Is iron/steel shaft technology lagging or is it just completely optimized already?

First off not every pro is gaming X100. Lots of guys playing PX and Nippon.

That said, creating a custom/special profile in a graphite shaft is much easier because of how they are made. It can be done in steel as well by varying thickness, taper rate, step number and size, etc but is just generally harder to do. Or maybe harder to charge a premium for since asking somebody to pay $400 for one driver shaft is easier than for a set of irons.

As you mention it’s what can/can’t be done. With materials, ability to change thickness, angle, strength of the prepeg there’s so much more that can be done with graphite compared to steel.
