119th U.S. Open -- What a triumph for the USGA

15th Club

Recommended Posts

Congratulations to Gary Woodland, and Low Amateur Viktor Hovland (closing with 67).

And what a triumph for the USGA! For a month now or more, how many GolfWRX comments and thread topics have been devoted to not if, but how, the USGA would ruin this event? The course setup was near-perfection. Great play was rewarded. Strategy was demanded, and when risks were taken with great execution, the rewards were great. (Woodland, on 14 and 17.) Barely-sloppy play was punished. (Matt Kuchar, a very solid player, going rough, to rough, to rough.)

It was a great leaderboard from start to finish. The best player in the world right now, Brooks Koepka, had an opportunity to exhibit his skills, and was only beaten by an even better performance. History was on the line, as Koepka had a chance at a 3rd consecutive national championship.

We have seen Pebble Beach every year for a Tour event, and for a half-dozen US Opens and never has the course been set up any better. It was the USGA that took Pebble and put it on the Majors map, notwithstanding the wonderful history of Bing Crosby.

With all respect to Gary Woodland for a wonderful win, today belongs to the administrators of the 119th U.S. Open.

Seriously? The day belongs to Woodland, not the USGA. Get a grip.

Oh, I think that's true for most of the golf world and the sporting world at large. Because they were not quite so obsessed with how badly the USGA was bound to fail. At GolfWRX, the day belongs to the USGA.

Those morons stayed out of the way finally ... no endless interviews with freaking Davis or David Fay or some E.W. Boatwright the third

It’s terrible TV though just boring with moments of brilliance by those great players ... good thing GW made that last putt or the last hour had the suspense of Paul Azinger reciting poetry

You're an utter pillock.... And possibly someone who eats puppy dogs and kittens. You know, going solely on this thread, but I think the evidence is there.

I commend the USGA in their setup. Maybe they finally realized to step out of the way and let the players shine, instead of trying to make themselves the story.

All that being said, the weather basically dictated their setup, and helped them immensely. And it remained cool enough all weekend that the course and greens never did truly dry out.

15th - I’ve never got sideways with you (that I can remember) but the arrogance of your OP is why so many of us loath the USGA.

That's it. Hey tourney organizer way to not ruin the event. How low a bar do we have for doling out kudos? Oh right... it's the USGA.

The fact that you need to actually commend the organization that puts on a $10+ million golf tournament for doing a good job should tell you all you need to know.

Nobody worries about commending the Masters, the PGA, or the R&A and their setups. Why? Because they get it right every year. Getting a setup right because the wind didn't blow and because the course got record rains over the past month isnt something to jump up and down about.

I don't know if it is more a case of the USGA getting something right or Pebble beach not letting them get it wrong and saying, stay home boy if you think you get to come in here and kill the place. But nothing I saw deserves bowing at the USGA alter and giving a blood sacrifice. It was a great event where the focus was on the players and then this thread......

Mike Davis didn’t hit a shot. But he did shank the announcement of the flyover.

The day is Gary Woodlands. Period.

The USga was saved from it’sSelf BECAUSE of patrons who complained.

My favorite was Mike Davis putting his hands up to tone down the USA chant.

Lol. Yep. That was good. Like a child age Pharaoh calming down his people.

It’s shocking to me that people are fans of that level of arrogance. Shocked he didn’t have a jewel encrusted ring for the winner to kiss.

"Loathe." The word you want is "loathe," not "loath."

Loathe is the word for reviling and hatred. ("I loathe sportstalk radio.")

Loath means reluctance. ("I'd be loath to listen to sportstalk radio.")

Dude. Nobody likes the grammar police.

And seriously. Read The other USga threads from today and yesterday. Many of us , myself included , praised them for a good job this week.

But your OP here. Is a shining example of why people hate the USga. You can’t possibly believe that the USga deserves the spotlight over the players who worked to preform this week. It’s that very idea that is the issue.
