Suggestions for last minute July trip

Recommended Posts

Mrs. Justmuckit's boss decided that she's had a phenomenal year at work and is treating us to an all-inclusive vacation to the location of our choosing. She plays golf as well, but likely wouldn't play every day. Looking for somewhere that's not oppressively hot and/or humid in July to spend 7-10 days - maybe a location where we can stay in a place for three days, move on, stay three days, rinse and repeat.

Unfortunately, our passports are not current so Canada is out of the question.

Ideas welcomed.

If ever there was a chance to go play Pebble Beach, this is it assuming there is availability.

My second recommendation would be Wisconsin. Kohler resort for a few days, then drive out to Sand Valley with a stop at Erin Hills.

Normally I would have just recommended Bandon Dunes, but if you're not golfing every day then there isn't a lot too do.

Make sure you give Mrs Justmuckit a big kiss. :)

While her boss is paying for it, I want to take advantage without "taking advantage" so Pebble is out of the question.

We've looked into Bandon, but considering the late notice we can only get three nights. Would be a rush to get all four courses in, but do-able. Would need to book several nights in Bend as well.

We've played Erin Hills before and have considered that as well, along with SV. Maybe take the ferry across the lake and hit Arcadia Bluffs as well. Hard part is that all of these places are pretty much golf only, which leaves her nothing to do on her days off.

We considered Palm Springs for a nanosecond, until I remembered it will be 115 in July.

Here is an out of the box idea:

Days 1-3/4: Half Moon Bay, CA, stay at the Ritz Carlton on the ocean and play one or both of their courses.

http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/california/half-moon-bay

Could also drive down to play Pasatiempo.

Day 4/5-6/7: Stay at the San Francisco hotel of your choosing. Either enjoy the city or play either Harding Park or Presidio.

Day 7-end of Vacation: Napa Valley, do the wine tasting or play some of the nice courses up there. Can’t personally recommend anything but I’ve heard Silverado is pretty good.

Best of all is you are never more than 90 minutes from the San Francisco airport,* and the drives between the locations are scenic.

*that’s in a fantasy, no-traffic world

This would have been my recommendation as well. Probably booked up now that the open was played at pebble. If you can swing a bit of cash, just have her boss pay for a portion of the Monterey trip. You get a huge price break, without "taking advantage". Best weather for summer get-away. Kohler or Traverse city also come to mind...... not much there but golf.

Kohler has a ton of other activities for your bride. Their spa is world class, they have the Kohler design center which is awesome (but could cost you a new bathroom or two), they have yoga, fishing, hiking trails, biking, horseback riding, shopping and a lot more.

What non-golf related activities are you looking for?

My wife and I recently did a golf-heavy Whistling Straits (2 nights, 3 rounds) trip so didn't have a chance to experience the spa, but by all accounts is top notch. You could also pair Whistling Straits with the Lake Geneva, which has solid (but not Top 100) golf and great lake activities.

Maui, or The Big Island of Hawaii? Plenty to do besides golf.

> Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Booked July 3-10 at Kohler and Sand Valley. Might decide to hit Lake Geneva on the way back.

Is Sand Valley last? If so, I'd suggest Lawsonia Links on the way back. Another option would be Wild Rock (in The Dells) or University Ridge in Madison. I'd say all three are better than the courses in Lake Geneva.

Yes, @Argonne69 - We'll be at Kohler from the 3rd-6th, and SV from the 6th to 10th.

If we decide to play golf on the way back, I'll definitely keep this in mind. As of now, we're thinking of just laying low somewhere for two nights just to chill out. Lake Geneva was suggested by a friend, we might stop in Chicago, haven't decided. If we play golf, I'm definitely rooting for Lawsonia or UR. Maybe I need to start researching Madison for restaurants/bars/breweries/etc...

Awesome trip you have lined up! There are a lot of threads on Sand Valley. We just played there a month ago and you're in for a treat.

> @DavePelz4 what are your thoughts on using a caddy at SV? My initial thought is to just go the rickshaw route.

We had a forecaddie for each of our rounds on SV and MD and he was very helpful in terms of course routing. We all had pushcarts though so other than providing lines, raking traps, etc., our caddie had a nice walk. Both courses are healthy walks with elevation changes. If you have time, play the Sandbox too. Fun to grab an adult beverage or 3, a wedge and putter...very fun par 3 course.

I had a junior caddie on Mammoth Dunes, and it was a fine round. With multiple rounds in a few days, I'm not sure if I'd rickshaw it. Let a junior carry your clubs, and enjoy the pleasant walk.

The Blackwolf Run courses are good very good. There is a small waterfront area in Sheboygan with restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors not far from Kohler.

re caddies, played both at SV a couple of weeks ago ... if money is no object, get one ... but you don't need one if you use the yardage books, though most people are just too "lazy" to think through a hole while playing it (i'm no different on occasion) ... SV has more need of a caddie than MD, imo, mainly due to the greens ... i didn't use a caddy and the only hole i would've needed one was 18 at SV (green slopes hard right to the pin behind in the little area on the right side) ... a caddie is required at whistling straits, i believe ...

if sv is booked, you can take a ferry over from wis to mich, and drive up to play arcadia ... think it was $100 or so last year ... 4 hour ride ... 1.5 hours to arcadia bluffs from the terminal ...

if you're driving, be very cautious driving at night ... i think i saw 50 deer on the side of the roads/interstates up there two weeks ago, hit by cars ... they're everywhere ...
