Who's better than Brooks Koepka in 4 consecutive Majors?

PostandGhost

Recommended Posts

I'm too lazy to google this question so I figured I would ask the Golf WRX Community for insight. Besides the obvious, Bobby Jones (1930), Tiger Woods (1999-2000, 2000-2001, & 2006-2007), Ben Hogan (1953-1954), and Jack Nicklaus (1971-1972), has anyone had a better stretch of 4 consecutive Majors, in terms of finish, than Brooks Koepka's last 4 majors (2018-2019)?

Well, Norman was leading all the majors after three rounds in 1986. Finished 2-12-1-2. And threw in a second the following Masters in 1987.

Actually led going into the back 9 at US Open/PGA only to shoot 4 over each time over the final 9. A lot of people forgot he birded 14-17 to tie for lead in Masters, only to hit a dreadful second on 18 tied for the lead. Classic Norman!

I will say, aside from Tiger, he was the most riveting golfer to watch in my lifetime. I just wish I could get those naked selfies out of my head!

Nope. Just the question. I didn’t know it was a rhetorical one.

Careful there. Somebody will get twisted over that. After all. Isn’t he the “ luckiest” winner ever. ? Lol. ( sArcasm ).

You are correct. It’s Jordan minus the obvious tiger.

Brooks is better over four consecutive majors

2018 PGA WIN

2019 Masters T2nd

2019 PGA WIN

2019 US Open 2nd

In the era of four majors, The Tiger Slam and Ben Hogan's Triple Crown (followed by a 2nd at The Masters) may be the only ones ahead of that. Jack's best is T2, W, 3, W from the 1965 PGA to 1966 British Open. Due to the 1971 PGA being played in February his 1970 British Open to 1972 British Open line reads W, T6, W, T2, 2, T5, W, W, 2, lots of great four majors stretches, but Brooks beats all of them.

uh, yeah, I guess.

Pretty esoteric discussion of "four" majors when you've got the PGA in there twice because of calendaring. But sure.

From my perspective, performance in four different majors is dramatically "better" - but that's a personal opinion, I suppose.

Usually the question is worded as "best year" like you are thinking. 2019 Brooks will need a win at Portrush to top Spieth in 2015.

The OP went for four consecutive majors this time.

If you believe that's a similar question, you might have misread my question. I wasn't making a statement or looking for an opinion based answer, as "who is the greatest" type answers would imply. Rather, I was looking for a factual based answer, which is why I prefaced the question with "in terms of finish". If I had asked "who has the greatest 4 consecutive majors", some Brooks Koepka blowhard could argue an asinine opinion on why his last 4 majors are better than Tiger's 4 majors from 2000-2001. That's what people like to do around here. However, if you preface the question based on finish, then you can't debate four wins over two wins and two 2nd place finishes. It's just facts. Sure, there might be some grey areas like in Spieth's case, but I think we call all agree two 2nd place finishes beats a 2nd place & 4th place finish combined.

A more comparable question to mine would be "Who is a better scorer than Lebron James in NBA Finals history, based on PPG?" Sure, we all know the obvious answers, Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant, just like I knew the obvious answers to my question, however, people always forget about Allen Iverson and Jerry West. I knew there were several golfer's with better 4 consecutive majors, but I couldn't think of the older, more unadorned answers like Braid, Vardon, and Anderson.

See, this is why I asked the question the way I did. I completely forgot that the 1971 PGA Championship was is February! I was just going based on memory of what majors Jack won in certain years. Thanks for correcting me. I think sometimes people, like myself, forget that the majors didn't always have concrete dates back in the day. The greats also didn't always play in all 4 majors every year. If I recall, Hogan skipped numerous PGA Championships and only played The Open once.

Walter Hagen's best

1923 PGA 2nd

1924 US Open T4th

1924 British Open WIN

1924 PGA WIN

Sam Snead's best

1949 Masters WIN

1949 US Open T2nd

skip British Open

1949 PGA WIN

1950 Masters 3rd

Arnold Palmer's best

1961 British Open WIN

1961 PGA T5th

1962 Masters WIN

1962 US Open 2nd

then he wins the 1962 British Open, so pick one stretch

Player, Watson and Faldo each have two wins and two top 10s

Brooks is ahead of all of them.

I get it. But I don't know what it shows except that there was a fluke of the calendar.

You guys are forgetting about a couple of runs for the wee iceman. ‘53 was his best calendar year with regards to majors but it wasn’t the first time he won three consecutive majors he played in. Ben won the 1950 US Open, skipped the 1950 PGA and Open Championship, and then won the Masters in 1951 followed by the US Open. It would have been four majors in a row if he had defended his title at the Masters in 1952.

He also went 1st, 1st, T4, and 1st from the 1948 PGA to the 1950 US Open. He skipped all the majors in 1949. I heard somewhere that he might have been injured that year.

He had an 18 major stretch where his worse finish was T8. It’s hard for me to even fathom a player, even Tiger Woods, going 18 consecutive played majors finishing inside the top 10. I’d call Hogan a machine but heck, even machines break down occasionally.

Jack went 23 straight majors from 1973-1978 only finishing outside of the top 10 once, which was a T11 at the '76 US Open.
