New project- Mac VIP Combo Set

Recommended Posts

Well, I believe my first post, or at least one of my first posts in the classic section of WRX was in the “Rounds with a Vintage Bag” thread a few years ago after I purchased a set of Macgregor CB-92 heads and built them up with some KBS shafts. They were the clubs I always wanted as a teen but couldn’t afford. Once got them on the course I began playing really well with them, so well I sold my modern clubs and began playing the CB-92’s exclusively.

Of course the revelation that I could play well with older clubs sent me down the path of searching out more and more old clubs to try, so the CB-92’s got disassembled, the shafts went into another set of heads and eventually the CB-92s were sold.

Well lately I’ve been bouncing between sets, playing vintage, modern, whatever I was feeling. Then I recalled I had a backup set of CB-92 heads in the workshop. Unfortunately I was missing the 8 and 9 iron but the heads I had were unhit, having been in Macgregor’s vault since new, having been liquidated with all the other assets when the company closed up. I was lucky enough to get them for $40 and they sat tucked away in my collection for a few years.

Well, why not give them a swing again so I shafted up the 4,5, & 7 iron with the only shafts I had on hand, some Hogan Apex 4’s. Took them to the range and I had a ball striking day like I haven’t had in months. I instantly remembered the feeling of a well struck CB-92. Not a buttery soft feeling like my KZG’s. Not a muted, bland feeling like my Hogan Ft. Worth’s, but a powerful “hammer driving a nail feeling”. Why did I put these away?

Well, instantly I knew I had to build the full set but I was missing the 8 and 9. I then stumbled upon the perfect replacements. Brand new, NOS Macgregor VIP forged blades, the same era as the CB-92’s.

Well I snatched them up and now have the beginnings of the perfect set of irons. I’ve got some special ferrules ordered and a nicer set of Apex 4’s arriving today.

Can’t wait to get these built!

They are all finished up. CB-92 cavity back 3-6, VIP muscle back 7-PW. Hogan Apex 4 stiff shafts, Boyd Blade & Ferrule Co. ferrules, and GripMaster Kidd leather grips in plum.

Had my first range session with them yesterday and they are fantastic.

They turned out excellent! I especially love the VIP blades. I gamed a set back in 1990-1992.

I love my BestGrips microperf grips. Super tacky and lasts a long time!!! These are the limited run "Patriot" microperf grips for the Independence Day season.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update on these bad boys. Today’s range session it all came together. I can now see why guys were pulling Hogan Apex shafts and sticking them in their own clubs of different brands. I was hitting the 4-iron 195 yards with a high flight, easily holding and imaginary green out at the 195 flag on the range. The 3-iron I’m still hitting a little low but over 200 yards, really where my 5 wood is.

I haven’t hit my irons this long for years. These are so pure. Love the heads. Love the shafts. A perfect combination.
