Rory & his caddie debate

Debate idea wasn't about his recent success/results - he's clearly talented and could probably win on the odd occasion with no caddie at all.

The debate is he could be even _better_ with some more seasoned guidance. I still think JP was a good caddie for him.

JP is on Matt Wolff's bag now.

Rory starting out in the pros would have now doubt benefited from having an experienced caddy at his side but the stage he's at now he could have anyone caddying for him.

No debate really - you can't ignore his results just because they get in the way of your take on his game and his life, obviously JP was no longer a good caddie for him (that's a personal choice and you have no real insight at all into their relationship on or off the course), it's his golf game and pros really don't and/or shouldn't need a caddie for "guidance", and what the heck is "more seasoned", lol - caddies are magically better if they look old?

But let's bring this up every week he doesn't win.

Harry Diamond:

1) is Rory’s lifelong friend (Rory trusts him and is comfortable with him);

2) is an elite player in his own right (Harry knows the game and how to win);

3) has been on the bag for multiple wins including a Players, and API, and a dominating performance at the Canadian Open (Harry has proven that he can guide a win).

Rory and Harry are doing just fine. Rory’s issue is not his caddie, it’s his putter. When he has it working (e.g., Canadian Open) he can dominate.

more I see. The more I know that a new caddie or new Coach wont make any difference with Rory. That should worry the Rory fanbase more than the reverse would. He simply has brain farts that throw chances away. He pooted away any shot he had early Sunday .... it’s a defense mechanism I believe. Fight or flight. He runs a lot of times. Until he learns to run toward the fire. Nothing will change. He will win when it all comes easy. And he will fade when it doesn’t.

Well, I'm glad that after a win in Canada and a decent showing in the USO, we can start this up again. Rory is going to win regardless of who is carrying his clubs around the course. He is going to have to have a good week in the short game department, as that is generally what keeps him from winning when he is higher up on the board. He is obviously very comfortable with his lifelong friend on the bag, he's won twice this year and had plenty of good showings in other events. Golf is, and always has been, a sport that you lose more often than you win.

I always wonder if these threads come from haters throwing shade or from disgruntled fans who don't think Rory is winning enough majors for their standards. So what he's having a "major" slump. Jack and Tiger both had "major" slumps. Regardless of who his caddy is, Rory will win another one eventually just as they did, hopefully before he's 40.

Would someone please explain that to JDay.

Lol. I got 2 disagrees. Curious. From those two people. Does that mean you think a caddie change will make him play better ?

What did Rory do on 13 and 14 on Friday that a caddie would have saved him from going bogey-double bogey? He missed the green from the fairway on 13 and he laid up on 14 and then missed the green again from 110 yards. Don't know how a caddie keeps you from simply hitting a bad shot.

I think Rory should rotate between Stevie, F a n n y, and Terry McNamera Thurs to Sat, then pick whoever he is gelling with the best for Sunday. With all that Nike money he could easily afford to have all 3 on staff.

Between rounds he could get all sorts of great Tiger, Faldo, and Anika anecdotes to really season himself up... as he continues to putt like someone out for a quick 9 after work and they end up not helping in the least.

JP still maybe a good looper, but it got really bad really quick, in that Rory’s name would come up in the, “He wins in spite of” conversations. Toward the end JP cost him shots no doubt about it in my mind. I followed inside the ropes at the API and overheard some conversations during practice rounds and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Just totally wrong numbers (in my opinion) and Rory would ask you think? It would be confirmed by JP and Rory would hit it and look mystified as to why he was 15 yards long or short, granted its a practice round but then he’d drop another ball and say let’s try this often hit a better shot. I had also heard from at least two other caddies who were looping for top 20 players at the time that JP would once a tournament cost McIlroy a shot.

I got to know Rory a good bit a Bear’s and his dad at Seminole, he can do well no matter who his caddie is. You have to take into consideration a players demeanor, could Steve Williams for example be an asset to Rory? Of course he could, but Tiger and Rory are different mentally, both fantastic players and vastly more talented than most on tour but very different. Rory is a more take it as it comes guy, and Tiger wants to go through the drive thru faster than you. So I think it isn’t a just plug so and so in since he/she did well with this player and Rory will take off if that makes sense.
