Reshaft a mint set of Ping i3+? HELP

GRJ_PING

Recommended Posts

Ok - so I sent a low mileage set of Ping i3 to Scottsdale to change color dot and regrip. However, I received a call that the shafts were too far gone with rust to adjust clubs and replace grips. They stated they can reshaft, adjust, tumble/repaint, new cushion inserts, swing weights and install new grips for $32/each. Should I pay to play or get them back and play until the shafts break? On a tight budget with a 2 month old and nonworking wife. Haha

I would search for the correct dot color for you and buy those. As a father of a young child you don’t want to risk playing those if the manufacturer is telling you they are too far gone. I3+are cheap

I don't know if it's worth the cost versus buying a new used set or new older model. That being said, if you like those clubs, $32 per club is super cheap for the amount of work they are doing if that includes the shafts and tools? If $32 is just for the work, that's still a very fair price. If it includes everything, it's stupid cheap.

Any decent builder can reshaft those clubs and bend the lies for you...for less than $32 each. What shafts do you want? Go hunt down some pulls. Tip weights can be used if you want to increase swingweight.

For another viewpoint:

I would spend a dime on reshafting a set of i3's, and I understand tight budgets better than most. Hang on to the money that you would spend, and when the i3's completely croak or your budget becomes a bit better, get a different set. (This is coming, btw, from a guy that sent his set of high mileage i5's back to Ping for a similar rework, and then used them for another few years after until I went to graphite shafts.) I had i3's and used them for years; they were and are great irons, but there is better out there now. Remember that if you invest a couple of hundred in these clubs, you will then have a pretty expensive set of 15+ year old clubs...

One reason for this may not make a bit of difference to you right now, and may never make any, but it could. And that is the groove rule, unless the USGA backs off on it. In January of 2024, you technically won't be able to even post a score for handicap purposes with those irons, much less play in any sort of USGA event. And remember that ANY state event, including most interclub matches and the like, are under the USGA umbrella. You might not be doing that stuff now, but you never know about 3 years down the road. There are people that are going to post after I post this that it doesn't matter, but you never know, and $200+ will go a long way toward buying a good set of conforming clubs.

A father of a new born ?

I don't know about you, but I had basically gave up golf when each of mine children was born.

Rounds of golf was few and far in between before they reached school years.

Diapers and formula were a larger portion of our spending, most importantly, I wish I had more time with the kids before they were grown up.

Trust me, 18 years will come and go really fast, golf will always be there, so will the used golf clubs.

Tough choice right ? How to chose between your own children who need you and your hobby ( provided golf is not your profession ). I had skipped many other "essentials" for the game of golf but I had never let it get in between my family and I.

As to answer your question of whether to have the i3 refinished by Ping. It is a great price to have them not only reshaft but also check swing weight , re-badge, regrip.... for $32 per club.

But, it'll depending on just how tight your budget is, and if you're going to keep the set for a long time. And if you're willing to look at the set in the bag for a long time not able to play golf cause you spend all your allowence for the next 6 months. That's fine.

Balance the budget is not difficult, the hard part is how to allocate your time with your family.

  • 1 month later...

I thought Ping weren't doing lie angle adjustments on the i3 any more, Ping Canada told me last year they weren't doing anything older than i5. Obviously that was incorrect.

I think $32/club is a fair price for new shaft, grip and refurbishing the heads. You're already out the shipping cost, so why not get it done if you like them, you'll get back a set that will look pretty close to new. You can probably save a couple of bucks by passing on the Cushion, I always thought it was a waste of money.
