Needed to vent: Extremely disappointed in quality of Nike/TW Collection Polos

Recommended Posts

I purchased a pair of TW Collection polos from the local Roger Dunn about 9.5 months ago. A shoulder injury and very rainy winter/spring in SoCal kept me off the course until I played a few rounds last week. Put the two shirts into the washer with the instructions it had on the tag ... in a nutshell: machine wash cold, inside out, tumble dry low. Lo and behold both shirts are falling apart in the placket section (where the buttons are)!

Roger Dunn won't do anything since they have a 90 day return policy. Nike says they can't do anything because the purchase had to have been made within 6 months. So I'm here venting because I'm annoyed I'm out over $200 after wearing each shirt once and putting it in the washer. Local alteration shop is going to see what they can do, but they think it was glued on there before so they don't think they can fix it without visible markings ...

I always air-dry mine on a hanger and haven't had any issues. I've learned my lesson the hard way that drying Nike golf shirts with any heat is the kiss of death.

Sympathetic to your situation.

I was looking at the rack of shirts today in the proshop. Nike and Adidas felt as flimsy as plastic sandwich bags.

RLX and FJ were better built, so to speak.

Peter Millar Summer Comfort seem to last. I've had some stand up two years already with regular use.

_always_ hang dry a synthetic shirt. dryers will curl the collars and ruin the fusings.

Yep, it was most likely the heat of dryer which caused it. I never had a problem with golf shirts in dryer until I threw in one of my TW ones. It’s because they have metal buttons. Ruined it and Nike wouldn’t replace because they said heat of dryer caused it. I don’t put any in the dryer anymore even if tags says low heat

Could it be your washer?,I’ve read many horror stories about people’s clothes getting ripped in the HE washers with the agitator on the bottom, just a thought.

I’ve never had a problem with my several dozen Nike polos including TW looks like this and I beat the heck out of them. I wash and dryer them and never read the tag instructions.

I grew up in the dry-cleaning/laundry business. If your golf shirts can't handle a dryer, then you purchased a cheap shirt (regardless of how much you paid for it).

Putting your shirts in a net bag will prevent them from getting yanked around by other items in the dryer and prevent damage.

One other thing to watch out for is zippers. Zippers on any items should be fully zipped before putting in a washer or dryer. An open zipper is like having a saw blade tumbling around--they snag, pull, and rip other garments.

GLUED!!!!!

How much did you pay, and the placket isn't even sewn in place? Cheap, cost-cutting move--plain and simple. The placket is one of the most stressed areas on a shirt, you need a strong connection. Gluing is absolutely unacceptable.

They can blind-stich it (the technique used to sew cuffs on dress pants so the stitches don't show on the outside). But, I recommend you just let them sew it back and live with the visible stitches.

Nike sizing can be a problem. Two shirts I bought online I had to resell, as they were far smaller than the exact same size in last years model...this is before washing. You would think after 40 plus years, Nike would have it all figured out.

You couldn’t return them? Nike lets you return used gear

They do, when it comes to making money.

Nike is NOT a sports or apparel company, it is a marketing company. They sell an image and a lifestyle. This happens to enable them to sell hard goods, but that isn't their focus.

A few years ago a Nike internal memo leaked which said Nike considers their primary competitor to be...video games.

I'm not saying all Nike products are sub-par, but their focus isn't creating top-end products, it's selling anything they can slap a logo on.

Anyone spending $100 on a golf shirt is buying into some kind of marketing. It's not the polyester.
