Ping “secret shoppers”

Recommended Posts

So I was talking to the sales guy at my country club today about getting a set of Ping blueprints. We usually get a hefty member discount (~30%) on everything, except apparently Ping. Unlike all other club manufacturers, they are relentless in enforcing their Minimum sales price policy. Literally, going so far as to have secret shoppers come into the pro shop and ask for discounts on Ping stuff, only to be asked for their member info and then told to piss off. The punishment is loss of Ping sales account, a distinction our head pro tells me is only needed to maintain the top 100 fitter designation. Needless to say, our club doesn’t think very highly of Ping and their policy and doesn’t sell many.

It’s a shame because I really wanted the blueprints but don’t feel like paying handmade prices for Chinese mass produced blades.

Interesting paradox. You are saying you really want Chinese mass produced blades, yet you disparage them by contrasting them with handmade clubs. So in your mind, you want a lesser quality club?

In a word, yes. Always wanted baby blades in lefty, this is about as close as I’m going to get. Also, It’s less about the quality of the club and more about production cost. Something handmade in Japan should be more expensive than something mass produced in China.

also, lol @ thinking Ping still makes stuff in Arizona. Their no discount policy probably made more sense back then as well.

Even if the mass produced is a better product? And works for you better? Would you pay more to have a handmade Yugo or a factory-mass produced-Bemz? Most products sell for what the market will bear-which generally is in line with quality not for the man hours it took to make said product.

Jury is still out on whether I get the discount. Some under the table shady stuff may or may not take place.

I just thought it was hilarious to send secret shoppers into country club pro shops to police minimum sales prices.

How do they even get to the pro shop? Don't they have to get in the door first?

I’m saying quality and performance aren’t necessarily interchangeable. I’m sure the Pings perform equally as well if not better, but the craftsmanship, weight tolerance and grain structure of a Japanese hand ground forging is certainly of superior quality. Your question then is, why not pay for performance over quality? My answer is that I might if I have to, but I won’t feel good knowing the production cost of the Ping is a fraction of a Miura.

I will admit that the following may be conjecture....take it with a grain of salt.....

You say the production cost is lower- but is it? Sure-there may be more man hours actually making the club. But how many more dollars go into R&D and the machines that make some of the "mass produced" clubs you speak of. Should a company get paid back for the cost of the machines? Or just man hours?

The pro shop is open to the public. We actually host an LPGA event, so more than used to outsiders wandering around.

With all the info in this thread they may not need to send a secret shopper to your country club. This thread is providing some good leads for Ping. lol

OEMs that discount their clubs willy nilly are typically raked over the coals even worse.

I think Pings prices are a bit high but you know you're paying what 97% of people will

I bought a set of PING ie1 4-PW, GW at the largest golf retailer in Canada golftown last November on sale for $550 CAD. From what I can tell online these clubs retail for $900+ in Canada. So I guess it’s not impossible to get deals on PING gear.

Since I've started golfing in 2000, Ping is always known the have the most strictest pricing policies out of all the OEMs (Taylormade among the loosest, when it was owned by Adidas). The word "discount" is not in Ping's vocabulary. They only way you'll get a current model Ping club at a discount is when you buy one used.

Even though I rarely buy new clubs (mostly used) Ping's stellar reputation for quality and service and high resale value justifies their clubs to be strictly sold at their suggested retail price and not a cent less (or a cent more).

It happened to my club pro few years ago. An old lady came to my club supposely wanting to buy a club for her grandson's birthday present and both of my club pro was out playing in a PGA Midwest tournament. So this old baitch nagged the club pro employee to get a discount. He finally gave in then few months later Ping pulled my club pro's account because of this baitch nagging. Ping are like that and it's too bad because I will not buy anything from them ever and I don't think my club pro has sold much of Ping's products.

I know they do good stuff for veterans but after this episode, I have no respect for Ping.

Really? The 10 series (G10s and i10s) were the last true USA made models. They began transitioning to China with the 15 series. Don't get out much? :)
