Best Used Newport 2 Style Putters?

RangeCoyote

Recommended Posts

Been rolling LHL with a customized 2015 Futura X5 for a while now. While I am happy with it, I am rebuilding my bag and swing, and I would like to dabble with putter and grip to make sure I am not missing out on anything.

That being said, its hard to overlook that BK, TW, and most recently GW have used Newport 2 style blades with a traditional grip to win. Not to mention Rickie who is considered by some to be a great putter.

I do not want to pay for SC prices as this is just an experiment. I do not care about shaft length or grip, as I will change this myself.

What would you recommend to look for on eBay?

Tried this newport 2 shape (just a bit wider) at PGA yesterday - here it is on sale - great putter:

Milled odyssey protype #2:

Taylormade Juno is another good option and sometimes very cheap on secondary market. And any of the Ping Anser 2's. Have some for around $110 at PGA superstore.

Thanks for your input, I like the second putter but no real photos of the actual item makes me weary.

Ideally I'm looking for something that is older and was not as mass produced.

I guess if the experiment fails I would at least like to have something that has some resale value or is cool to mess with from time to time.

The only thing that is going to have meaningful 'resale value' will be an expensive putter.

For something less common and not expensive:

Well "Meaningful Resale Value" is relative. I would like to purchase something that retains its value no matter the brand, initial purchase price, or how long it was owned and/or used.

Cameron holds it value better than I think any other brand out there (possibly of any and all golf equipment)

if you're smart and patient about your purchase, you can get a great Cameron for a reasonable price, and it will more than likely hold its value

This is partly why I never feel bad about making a fair purchase of a Scotty Cameron, no matter how old. If I don't like it or get bored with it, you rarely lose much money if at all.

The Odyssey Protypes are very good milled putters, if you can find one - or even an odyssey RSX 001 - I would give that a go. I loved the Ping Voss Line as well - was more of a firm feel if I recall correctly.

Why not start with a classic? Can get one brand new and it will hold relatively good resale. The only consideration would be the weight, but that’s fairly simple to address.

Just picked this up. My first anser shape. Not quite as wide as the o works 1w. Stainless steel. Firm clicky feel. Nice heavy head. They can be found on ebay. But they aren't very common at all from what I've found.

Any Ping Anser 2 would fit the bill and not break the bank for you. I’m currently gaming a Scottsdale TR Anser 2. Got it used on the cheap and it was practically new. Switched back to a blade putter this year after 2yrs with an Odyssey #7. My speed is a ton better and so is my lag putting with the blade putter.

  • 4 months later...

Just wanted to update this thread in case anyone has the same question.

Picked up a brand new Cleveland Huntington Beach #4 for $100 at the local Edwin Watts. Great putter for the price and made plenty of putts with it. Definitely recommend this putter if you are wanting to switch to this style or have a junior who wants to play this style head. With a little paint stripper and acetone most won't know exactly what it is unless they are super close.

After a month or so I decided that I could live with this putter head and grip change. I started doing further research and this led to me purchasing a Bettinardi Studio Stock 2.

Now having gamed the SS2 for a couple of months I've never had so much confidence putting the ball before. I feel like I can make any putt I stand over. The only negative I've found is that I now want something custom or from the Hive haha.
