Erin Hills Advice

Greetings everyone!

I will be golfing at Erin Hills for the first time with a group in late July. Any advice from anyone in regards to behaving the experience? One individual hasn’t been to a golf course of this stature and I’m curious as to any recommendations to add to the experience. I hear the caddies are great! I am unsure of the accommodations and overall environment at Erin. Should we plan to arrive hours before the tee time to experience the course and environment similar to a Whistling or Pebble, or is it not as much of an experience.

I love everything about Erin. I think the practice facility is top notch. I don't know about getting there hours before, but I also didn't get to Pebble or Whistling hours before either. I'd suggest staying and having dinner/drink on their terrace. It is a beautiful way to end the day. Had a great caddie there and highly recommend getting one.

They do have a breakfast buffet I believe, but don't know anything about it.

A buddy and I just recently played there for the first time last month and all I can say is WOW!! We normally don't play expensive or luxurious courses, but we did splurge on this one and I don't regret one thing about it. We arrived a couple hours early to try to take it all in and I am glad we did. We checked in and spent a little time in the golf shop as well as checking out the lay of the land. We then warmed up a little on the range, which is top shelf as well. After, we went and had lunch on the patio overlooking the course and just enjoyed ourselves to the max (I highly recommend eating on the patio). We then went back to range to meet our caddies (another recommendation!) and finished warming up before heading to the putting green. The course and caddies were everything I thought it would be; top notch! After playing, we then cleaned up in the very nice locker room and then had supper on the patio once more. Not one thing was bad about the trip and would highly recommend to anyone. We loved it so much, we played again the next morning. We are planning on doing it again next year and do nothing different as everything was perfect.

You definitely want to get there a bit earlier than normal. As MCI pointed out, the practice facilities and wonderful. Also, make sure you have caddies as if you're not used to walking 9 mile courses with a ton of elevation changes, the course can wear you down. Would also recommend the post round libation.

On 18 if your caddie tells you to aim 30 yards right of the green, trust him and do exactly what he says.

ask for this caddie, if he isn't available, play another day. You will love spending the day with him.

It's not clear from your post if you are staying on site or not.

Assuming you are not, then as others have mentioned you'll want to get there a little early to hit the practice area, browse the pro shop, etc.

Absolutely take a caddy. Erin Hills is one of the longest courses I've walked. In July you are likely to have some pretty hot and humid weather so make sure that you are fully hydrated before your round (start the night before) and keep drinking during your round. You don't want to run out of gas.

After your round definitely grab an adult beverage or two on the patio.

food at Erin Hills is solid, but if you really want a great Wisconsin dining experience head over to the Little Red Inn in Hartford after your round. It's an old school Wisconsin bar and supper club. Fantastic food. About 5 minutes from EH.

Erin Hills website mentions that pull carts are not allowed. Is that true? One either gets a caddie, or carries?

Edit: Nevermind. I found their caddie page, and sure enough it's carry only. That's quite odd given that Bandon, Streamsong, and Sand Valley all allow push/pull carts.

There aren't many things to dislike about EH but that's one and the fact that the caddie doesn't get 100% of the caddie fee is another. The folks at SV are very proud to tell you the caddie gets 100% and that you pay them directly.

It certainly does seem odd that they don’t allow them, but to be completely honest I wouldn’t bring my pushcart with me anyways even if I could, as all the pushing up hills would be a PITA (and I am a proud regular user of my pushcart). I just put the bare minimum in my PING moonlight for my round there and found it a wonderful walk, even in 90 degree temps and high humidity! As someone who has carried at the courses mentioned above (SV, Bandon, Streamsong, and, of course, EH), Erin strikes me as the least appropriate for a push cart given the occasionally steep terrain.

I'd use a rickshaw. Much easier than a pushcart in sandy terrain.

Erin Hills is not what I’d call sandy terrain though...

Only thing that I would add - keep your ball out of the long stuff!

This is some advice that i would love to follow, but likely won’t lol.
