Most undeserving major winner ever?

I would go with Nick Faldo after Norman's collapse, Ernie Els after Scott's failure to close on the Open Championship, or the infamous Paul Lawrie after the meltdown on #18 by Van de Velde. These were more undeserving than Willet. Even Ben Curtis when Thomas Bjorn melted down in the bunker.

What an ignorant post, 67 in the final round from Lawrie and those two long irons he hit to one of the toughest golf holes in the world and he's an undeserving winner?

I hate these threads but interesting that most target a player they probably don't like but won fair and square by outscoring the field on the given week.

No disrespect to man himself but unless someone can think of a better example it has to be Bob Goalby.

Really??? Van de Velde was standing on the 18th tee with a three shot lead and only needed a double bogey to win. I will give credit to Lawrie to hitting the shots, but it was handed to him by the most insane shot decisions by Van de Velde. No way you hit driver on 18 with a three shot lead and then follow that up by getting away the tee shot and then trying to hit a 2 iron to the green when you are out of position when all you need is a double bogey to win the championship.

Yeh but that wasnt the end of it.....Lawrie didnt win at that point. He went out and WON the play off against VDV and Justin Leonard( a major winner).

Tiger Woods Masters 2019, backed into it.

You are correct, he did in fact earn the win in the playoff, but without the largest meltdown on the final hole in major history, there would not even been a playoff.

Even if you take some of the worst ones (Scott 2012 Open Championship, Dufner 2011 PGA, DJ 2010 US Open, Norman 1996 Masters, Van de Velde 1999 Open Championship) it still took someone else rising up to get the win.

Nice first post-calling someone else's opinion "ignorant". Lawrie shot a nice final round-that makes him more worthy than the guy that got probably the worst break in major history hitting the pole in the grandstand?

Edited to add: To be clear Lawrie is not "undeserving". He tied in regulation and won the playoff.

Regardless of how worthy some people rate certain winners they won it on the course whereas Goalby effectively won it in the scorers tent. Again no disrespect to the man as he beat the rest of the field and would have had a chance to win via a playoff.

Unless there was a freaky bad break or something crazy like the DiVincenzo situation, whoever shot the lowest score deserved to win. It doesn’t matter if someone else collapsed. The winner didn’t and shot the lower score.

As far as I’m concerned if your name is at the top of the leaderboard at the end of a major you deserved it.

Or in the US Women’s Open a few years ago, that one player got a ridiculous penalty for touching some sand in a bunker that you could only see by super hi def. Something like that could be argued to lead to an undeserving winner

Greg Norman and Seve “gave” Jack the masters in 86....

The point being [lots of] major winners require a bit of help...not all, but more than not

Even those winners whose careers are iconic

Hanging around the top of the leader board will snag you a few majors over a career. Just ask Jack. (a few 2nds will fall in your lap as well)

Oh, Tiger did this at the Masters this year as well, so did he not deserve to win, when everyone else choked?

Agreed, if not Tiger should have just given Molinari the green jacket right? What you shoot Th-Sat only gets you an interview in the press room Saturday night.
