Daly, no cart at The Open, he's upset

Daly needs a keto diet. Eat lots of fat and meat, lose weight, get healthy, compete again. That extra 100 lbs isn't doing his knee any favours.

Correct, he needs to lose 100lbs, and he also needs a knee replacement. Until he does both of those he just comes across as a whiner.

I have no problem with him asking for a cart and no problem w/the R&A denying. As Johnnypenso points out, his weight is a contributor to his knee problems and that is something within his control.

He's been like that forever. After seeing Being John Daly a number of years ago I completely stopped giving him the benefit of the doubt. He has an air of entitlement about him.

He could have walked the US Open.

After watching John hobble around at the AmFam here a few weeks ago - even with a cart - I don't doubt that he is sincere about his knee/leg. As others said, no problem with him asking the R&A. But John needs to stop using his chronic knee condition as a crutch in order to ride carts in tournaments where they are not normally permitted. There are many guys in golf tournaments each weeks with aches and pains that would be helped by being able to ride a cart.

John has gotten used to riding a cart on the Champions Tour, and its made him a little bit lazy thinking he should be able to use a cart for any event he wants. He's not "disabled"....he has a condition that is fixable, and he has chosen not to fix it as of yet. One of the reasons he hasn't gotten it fixed is because he is able to ride a cart in Champions Tour events.

Personally, I'd be embarrassed to ride a cart and have a caddie carry my bag. But that's what John does every week on the Champions Tour.

I'd love to see the comments if JD actually won a major using a cart when the other players had to walk.

JD--- quit your b'chin and just walk...besides, it's only 2 days and you can rest alllllllll weekend.

Now battling necrosis from a brown recluse bite. I'm a JD fan, hope he loses weight, gets his knee functioning and calls an exterminator.

I have no doubt his knee is in pain, but get it taken care of, modern medicine will get him back up and walking pain free in a few months. I know people like John, they would rather lay around and whine than address the issue.

Using crutches on the greens would be interesting... I wonder if they could stop that too?

Stuff upper lip clause - his exemption should have been revoked years ago on account of all the whining.

This is like a pitcher that needs Tommy John surgery asking to use a pitching machine. Get your knee fixed, take care of yourself, or only play tournaments where carts are allowed.

I've been an on again/off again fan of John Daly over the years. But as a left & right knee replacement senior, I have no sympathy for John & his knee pain. Go get a knee replacement, do the rehab & get back to walking you big baby. Of course, most orthopedic surgeons won't touch him until he loses a lot of weight & starts a serious workout program. And he needs to make some serious lifestyle changes, but that's up to him, & I doubt it'll ever happen. He still seems to be his own worst enemy.

Maybe he should file suit as Casey Martin did?

I am glad they denied the cart and I hope the other tournaments going forward do the same. He is not disabled. He is quite overweight borderline obese, smokes 2 packs a day and does not exercise.

He may have gotten away with those lifestyle choices in his 30's-40's but now he is paying the price and it will only get worse if he does not address them.

To my knowledge there aren't any brown recluse spiders in the UK, more likely a false black widow.

The title of this thread would be more appropriate if it was "Daly, no BEVERAGE cart at The Open, he's upset."

As was mentioned, I watched him hobble around the AmFam so I don't doubt that he's in pain. But to flat out admit that he is making the choice not to get it fixed on top of not making the lifestyle changes to lose at least some of the weight that I have zero doubt helps to make that pain worse, I can't even begin to feel sorry for him. That's on him, he gets to deal with the issues he has decided to not take action on.

I always find it absurd with him (as well as athletes in other sports) where, if you job is you using your body, that you don't put an at least a mild effort to keep your body healthy.

Just imagine how good he could have been if he stayed in reasonably good shape (like, took care of himself and ate right 1 day a week). He'd probably still be competing in majors.

It's impressive he's so fat after lap band surgery. If he was half as committed to his golf game as he is to eating he would have won a whole lot more.

Maybe he should just sell merchandise outside the tournament grounds at the Open, like he does at the Masters?

Plus the walking in between pubs. That's probably why the 18 holes is too much to walk.

IMO, if you cant walk 4 18-hole rounds, its time to give it up. Being able to ride in a cart is an unfair advantage, even if someone has physical limitations that make it difficult to walk 18.

The most disappointing aspect of this all is that he is still going to play! Someone who could do something with that spot is going to miss out so he can drag his sorry arse around for a couple of rounds before missing the cut.
