Swing your swing as Arnie famously said. I see that he is going old school w/the UST V2 shaft in his driver.

You wouldn't think that the John Deere Classic is the best place to prepare for the British Open, but in the last four years this has been the case.

2015 Champion Zach Johnson finished T3rd at the John Deere. The John Deere winner, Jordan Spieth, finished T4th at the British Open.

2016 Champion Henrik Stenson finished T13th in Scotland. (the John Deere was played after the British Open)

2017 Champion Jordan Spieth skipped both

2018 Champion Francesco Molinari finished T2nd at the John Deere.

The top finisher (in the Top 5) this week not already in the British Open gets to go to Royal Portrush.

Looking at the field, this is going to be a very small charter to Ireland. Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Charles Howell III, Kyle Stanley, Ryan Palmer and Austin Connelly are already in.

People have loved to bash this tournament's strength of field over the years, but this could be a new low. With Kevin Na now out of the field, there is no one from the OWGR Top 50. The 2016 event was played opposite of The Olympics and had a SoF of just 79.

Hopefully, the young guns produce like they did last week.

The purse edges up to $6,000,000 with winner getting $1,080,000. It will be a big battle for FedExCup points too as this event has 500 compared to the 300 at the Barbasol and Barracuda.

They allow a shockingly large number of family members to accompany the players to the Open. I believe it's 5 family members and then also the caddies and potentially a spouse or S/O.

Don't forget about 21 year old Doc Redman. He is in the field this week. Like Morikawa he earned special temporary status for the PGA Tour in two events with his 2nd place finish at The Rocket Mortgage Classic. Actually has a few more FEC points than Morikawa.

Don't get why people love Choi but Wolff brings the haters out even though he has a better game. Choi doesn't even belong on the PGA tour other than for fan points. Surprised with Wolff's win they kept the odds down for him. Would think more people are betting on him with a weak field. I'm rooting for Hovland so they can get a rivalry started. Next year though they'll start making noise in majors.

The John Deere is bashed as being some sort of no-name tournament, but all you have to do is look at the list of champions from this event over the past decade and its often the stepping stone to bigger things for the young guys, or its established vets getting wins. Perry. Stricker 3 times. Johnson. Spieth twice. Harman. Moore. DeChambeau. Pretty impressive champions list, to be quite honest.

For those who whine about seeing nothing but the usual suspects on golf TV and never seeing any fresh faces or any of the young guys on tour, now is your chance, as this field is actually headlined by the future of this tour.

What do you mean? On the charter flight from the John Deere to Open?

Good point. Redman won the US Amateur and is already an afterthought.

I also like Sam Burns who is just 22. Most already forget he was the one who impressed in that final group with Tiger at the Honda last year.

I tend to agree but he is an interesting character and as long as Tony Romo keeps getting invites any player in comparison seems worthy to me.

The DoF did go under the 2016 event.

Currently it has a SoF of 78. The minimum first place points of 24 will be awarded of course.

The previous worst SoF in a PGA Tour event in 2018-19 (non opposite field) was the RSM Classic with a SoF of 100.

This is the worst SoF in a regular PGA Tour stop since the OHL at Mayakoba in 2014 with a total of 68.

Clair Peterson was on the Scorecard radio show on WSCR here in Chicago Saturday talking about the event. He said because there is a smaller number going from The Quad Cities to the Open, they increased the number. The players are requested to make a donation of $1,750 per seat to the "Birdies for Charity" bonus fund. The charter is the 767 that the Dallas Mavericks use for their team.
