Grip size

Recommended Posts

I have big hands, I wear XXL golf gloves. In theory, I should be playing with "jumbo" grips, or at least midsize, but they always felt too "bulky" to me. I recently bought a set of irons that have jumbo grips on them, and while the feel is weird to me, the grips are brand new and I feel terrible pulling them off the set.

What are the issues associated with playing grips that are too small? What are the benefits to playing properly sized grips..

Anyone else play the "wrong" sized grips?

Most people who are wearing XXL gloves have thick hands and quite often make the mistake of thinking they need XL grips when more than likely, they need standard or even undersized grips.

I wear a large glove, and use Lamkin Oversized crosslines. Not the midsized ones, the oversized. So yes I use "wrong" sized grips. I want my hands as quiet as possible, so I have always used at least mid-sized grips. The jumbo ones help even more with this.

"In theory" one should play the size of grip that feels most comfortable - allows a secure feeling hold on the club with the minimal amount of grip pressure. At least that's the only theory that matters.

There are lots of ways changing grip size can influence the results - but they are very subjective so not very predictable. There are some very common misconceptions on what should happen but those should be ignored. e.g. too big restricts the hands or slows the release - too small speeds up the release and makes the hands more active. Neither are any type of universal or even reliable "truth".

It really comes down to

1) how does the different size effect the grip pressure and muscle tension in the forearms

2) how does the change in size effect how the player places the grips in the hands.

3) and how those differences might effect the set-up position and actual swing.

So bottom line is that the **ONLY** way you'll know how it will effect you and your results - is to go out and hit some balls with those grips and see what happens.

If you ask around, you might find some local builder willing to try and blow the grips off w/o damaging them. It's a PITA but it is possible if one has the right tools.

I believe if you play a grip too small you may have the tendency to turn over the club, so potentially more pulls and hooks. That being said I think you should play what feels comfortable to you.

I believe that too small a grip makes your hands too active and can cause pull hooks, etc. as mentioned above. The opposite is true with too large a grip which doens't allow you hands to be active enough I guess. From what I remember being told you're supposed to use a grip that allows your last 3 left hand fingers (rh player) to just tough your palm. But ultimately it comes down to what you are comfortable with.

What it usually leads to is re-gripping during the swing which leads to the pulls and hooks since the face is usually closed. Path is another matter entirely.

I wear a size "Medium" glove but that's because I want it to really stretch onto my hand and fit as snugly as possible. Probably I'm more of a natural "Medium-Large" hand size.

But I don't do well with standard sized grips. Most midsize are a bit too large but I'm better off with midsize than a typical standard Tour Velvet or NDMC type. I've found that a tiny bit too large a grip has almost no effect on my swing but an even slightly too small one makes me clench too hard with my bottom hand, trying to keep a secure hold.

I've ended up with the Star Grips Smoothee which is supposedly "standard" but seems to be about 0.020 or 0.025" larger than standard Tour Velvet, for instance. Perfect.

My rule of thumb is always go to the bigger size if you are going to error either way. Smaller grips lead to tension and tension is just bad. Yes, the standard rule is smaller grips will miss left for RH and larger will miss right but I have seen that tension from a smaller grip lead to misses both ways. I truly believe that if you go hit 100 balls with the larger grips, they will no longer feel weird. It alway gets my goat when people on here talk about fitting and the idea that you can instantly know what is good and what is bad. If you make a swing change, how long does it take before that movement feels right? Hundreds of balls, maybe 500.

So play what you like, but don't discount something just based on initial feel. Give it a chance.

Midsize feels good to me and I have XXL hands as well. But after switching to standard plus 4 wraps I'll never go back, I feel like I have good control without being disconnected from the shaft but it's also not super skinny either.

I got a new shaft today and it had a regular grip on it... I hit it fine for most of the round, but just don't trust regular sized grips. Got it regripped into a midsize for my game tomorrow... I spent $14 to get it regripped with a Midsize Golf Pride MCC 4 Plus. I will probably replace the driver before I replace the grip.

Play what you are comfortable with. I can't swing a club I'm not comfortable with. For me, I need midsize grips... It's worth the money every time... then again, I regripped my old wedges with the same midsize grips but with paint fill in the crosses so they matched my new wedge.

I'm VERY particular about my grips. It's not much of an investment to get them done right.

Funny you say that. My other set has +4 grips on them (well, the previous owner simulated +4 by building up sections with tape) and I have gotten to like them.

Sounds like you know what you like... I'd get them regripped... I also wear XXL gloves (and have big hands) and play midsize... if you are comfortable with a grip go with that.

I played standard for years until recently realizing I’m gripping way too hard. Started with some medium grips but now I’m experimenting with oversized grips which I’m liking even better so far. My grip is more relaxed now and don’t feel like I’m strangling the shaft. For reference I wear a large glove.

i just went the other direction (from midsize w/ less taper to standard w/ more taper). I feel I can easily grip the club with my left hand only and apply just my right fingers on the club for a guide. my swing has gotten shorter over the years and the smaller grip helps the club to set properly at the top. making a full turn back is the most critical thing for my swing. i think the whole pull left thing is a myth that sort of caught on. my pulls come from not finishing the back-swing. go for what feels good when you hit a half speed swing.

Same here. I always struggled with a death grip on the club. A new instructor noticed how my fingers were digging into my palms. I realized I had to do that to feel like I had a secure grip. He suggested I get midsized grips and immediately I felt like I could take a lighter grip.

It's all personal preference. There's no law saying you have to play with smaller grips if you have small hands and vice versa. I don't wear a glove anymore but back in the day when I do it was a Medium Cadet yet I've been playing with Oversized Grips (Lamkin Crossline) for the past 5 years. It just feels better in my hand and the chances of me rolling the clubface over is lowered.

I have big hands and played standard grips for a long time. My hands and wrists would usually feel weak, even ache, after a round. Some years ago, lamkin oversized grips were on sale, so I gripped my irons with those and loved them. Hands and wrists felt fine, and I felt it was easier to keep a good grip with less pressure. These days I play Winn Dri-Tac OS because they're comfortable, good grip in rain/sweat and probably the only grip out there in +1/8 that's 50 grams (no swing weight tweaks).

I mostly know what size glove I use from playing for a few years with Tour Velvet or NDMC or MCC Plus 4 grips that were just a tiny bit too small. It was forming an awful, ugly callus at the base of my right hand (lefty golfer) so I started wearing gloves.

Now that I'm using the very slightly larger Star Grips that fit me perfectly, I don't wear the gloves any more and no callus!

I'm an XL to XXL glove, very big/thick palm.

I play midsize grip MCC plus4 grips on all but my driver and hybrid. The midsize feels pretty good, could probably do with an extra wrap or two on them.

But I've felt some jumbo and oversized grips and it feels like a baseball bat to me.

So if midsize is just too small add a few layers of wrap. If anything try a single club and then do the rest after.

I'll tell you how far down the rabbit hole I've gone lately...

I noticed that when I choke down on my hybrids, the grip feels less skinny than it does on my irons. So I got out the calipers and, go figure, the hybrid shafts where they exit the bottom of the grip are 0.590" diameter. Basically those shafts hardly taper at all in the first ten inches below the 0.600" butts. My irons are about 0.575" where they exit the grip. And my sand wedge shaft (different shaft than in my irons) is just 0.565" where the grip ends.

You'd think no way I can feel a difference of about 15 thousandths under my left hand but I think i can. So I pulled my PW grip, added some of that extra thick build-up tape (adds 0.015" per wrap) starting at the first shaft step-down point, added the usual grip tape and regripped it. I swear it feels better under the left hand in normal address position and it definitely feels less choked-down skinny.

Remender the old story about the Princess and the Pea? I think I am the Princess.

I wear a medium large glove but I play oversized Winn Excel grips. Had a set from CallawayPreOwned that they forgot to re-grip and left them on there. At first I was like WTH??? I did not have time to change them out before I played and after few holes I really started to like them because I would not squeeze down so hard and it really helped my tendonitis.

That’s exactly how I felt a really long time ago about my grips and noticed the same thing. So for 20 years I have been so particular about how many wraps I put under the grip and where to get it where it feels right. You aren’t crazy...you can feel those small of differences. When you find that size that feels right, that’s your number. Hard part is the test runs sometimes to get it right for different shafts. When I grip a set of irons I use the 3 iron as the test dummy. It’s the least used so I don’t normally tear it off after if it’s wrong. But it becomes the basis for more or less buildup tape. I just put Catalyst 100 shafts in my irons and ended up with 1 full wrap and 6 extra wraps under the right hand progressing down the grip with each wrap. Basically first extra wrap to the left hand. Next wrap starts inch below that and so on. Almost eliminates the taper. Used UTX grips.

Agree, the "book" is not really correct, but we often see a "variable face angle" from grips to small, but thats hardly ever present with grips too large, its seem easier to adapt to a large size than a smaller size.

When Jumbomax came to the marked in 2011 i took them home and expected that many players would struggle to close up face in time...nope, that did not happen, so we are back to "comfort" and how your hands like it or not, that seams to be the most important, and thats personal.

Grip size charts suggest i should use standard with 2 layers of BU or 0.930 measured 2 inch below the grip end, but i play Lamkin Crossline JUMBO, so for the lowest hand, the difference is HUGE since Lamkin has less taper than Golf Pride and for me, thats way better than suggested grip size. (im getting old so this change is as expected, my hand is not like im 20 yrs anymore so tension comes very easy if something is not comfortable)
