Best acquisitions of the year

I wasn't going to try to acquire anything this year but...A friend had a like new 2014 Cameron Select Newport that I was curious to try. I don't usually get along with Cameron putters, but I made more puts in the 3 weeks that he let me use it than I have in years! He asks me if I want to buy it -- well, of course! If the price is right...Would $100 work? Uh....Yeah it would!! I tried to talk him up in price, but he just wouldn't budge! I made him a 5W and bought him dinner but still feel a little guilty...

I traded in some old AP2s, a 910D3 and 910Fd and got in-store credit for what I might have been able to sell them outright for...I had already replaced the old driver and 3W and just never got along with the AP2s so I don't miss them. I ended up getting a Mizzy ST190 for $46!! I can't remember the last time I've been current with a driver -- can't wait to hit this thing!

My best acquisition has probably been my 718 AP2 irons. They're a little less punishing than my prior JPX 900 Tours on slight misses (i.e. I lose a little less distance) and I just feel a bit more confident with them. My scores haven't changed significantly since moving to the AP2, but I've always been a Titleist guy, so feeling more confident with them is completely a mental thing.

Yururi Tataki wedges. Actually bought them last year but never used as the head looked too large. Put them up for sale but no buyers. Which turned out to be a good thing. Gave them a chance this year and they're a dream to play. Hit any kind of shot...full or greenside. Lines up beautifully on fairway for straight shots, opens up around greens seamlessly, and moves sand out of bunkers so easily makes the difficultly not much more than putting from same distance. And feel? Of yeah, soft yet well compressed ball

I saw a lightly used 2-PW set of 1999 Hogan Apex MB on Craigslist for $100 CDN last week. Got him down to $80.

I should go to jail for practically robbing him.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

My best acquisition this year was ordering an AP3 3-iron, to go along with my 716 AP2's. I had a TMb 3 iron that I loved to look at but just could not muster enough clubhead speed to use it effectively enough. The AP3 offers a bit more forgiveness, or at least the look inspires confidence with the offset that I can hit it high and play it the way I'm use to. I've never really got along with hybrids of any brand and have alway been a strong long iron player and this AP was by far the best addition in some time. It gaps well in my set and can hit it about as far as my 5 wood.

I got a set of 2003 Hogans for $125. They showed up last week in a trashed box and the 5 iron shaft was bent. I was disappointed and let the seller know, who said to go through ebay because of the terms of the shipping program he used (which state it’s ebay’s problem after he gives it to them).

Long story short ebay paid/refunded the $125 and let me keep the clubs. I got the set for the price of an Apex 4 5-iron shaft.

So yeah, we can be cellmates!

$20 for an Adams Fast 12 LS driver with a real Matrix TP5HD shaft. Bought it because I thought the shaft might be worth $20 (not realizing this was the absurd $899 retail version) and it would look good in my Cobra F8. But I took the Fast12 to the range, and it was bombing. Spent some time on the launch monitors, and getting 3-5 mph more ball speed and 300-400 rpm less spin than the best I can do with the F8. Now I am hesitant to even pull the Adams adapter off the shaft to try in the F8 - I may just keep playing the Adams.

M4 3HL with tour ad-iz. I've never really gotten along with a fairway wood. Closest thing was the F6 baffler, if that counts. This thing may stay in the bag a long time. Long and straight. I love it off the tee. It was a $180 ebay steal too.

Lessons and Maltby DBM irons. I loved my Ping I200s but I hit too many shots thin. After reading all the posts on how the DBMs take to shots lower on the face I gave them a try. Glad I did, the Pings are now in the backup slot.

My Mizuno hybrid. I have always been a hybrid guy and never really hit one poorly but this thing has been a godsend. It flies 185-190 every time, dead straight. The shaft is so easy to load. I bought a Tensei White 90 pull before it arrived anticipating the stock Speeder EVO II HB or whatever is in this thing would be too light but man am I diming it. I tried it on GCQuad against Accra TZ5, Accra TZ6, Accra 200HY, Tensei White 90 and 100, DI 85HY, VA Raijin and Slay 85, and Fuji Pro 2.0 7 and 8 HY and nothing touched the launch, spin, and feel of the stock. As someone else said about their Adams, I am scared to even pull the adapter off and try anything in it because the magic might disappear.

Taylormade R510TP - Speeder 757 Sonartec NP-99 14* and 17* - NV Green 85 Nickent Genex 3DX 21* - Dynamic Gold SL Titleist 660 4-P - Dynamic Gold Cleveland 54* and 59* - Dynamic Gold Scotty Cameron Teryllium

2019 Cobra King Forged MB's 5-PW, GW with KBS $-Taper 120 stiff shafts.. given that I've tried and sold off;

Ping i500's, Taylormade P730, Taylormade P770, Taylormade P760, Mizuno 919 Tours, Titleist 716 MB's..

With any irons in the bag I typically shoot about the same scores, so I decided to play what I liked the look of and feel of the best and for once get better at using them..

8 putters.

I was rubbish at putting until 3 or 4 months ago, buying a stack of them gave me the interest to sort it out. And it worked, reckon I’m saving at least 5 shots per round now. Having a few different types, blades, mallets, face-balanced, TH, made me think about everything and look into methodology of stroke.

Have sold two of them so I’m down to 7, I had one already, and I’m looking to sell two more to give me five to trial further, with a view to cutting it down to 3 or 4 within the next 6 months.

My putting has gone from being a serious liability to decent.

*And no, I won’t lose any money on the purchases as I’ve been careful in snapping up bargains. An investment.

Of the clubs I have added this season thankfully the only club that has left me “wanting” is my Rogue 3 Wood. I have added a Cobra F9 Tour, Ping iBlades, and a Rogue 5 Wood which are currently lifers in my bag. I will need new wedges soon and I need to find a lifer 3 wood (Rogue is a monster off a tee, but need more off the fairway).

Driver: Titleist Tsi3 w/HZRDUS Smoke Yellow TX 6.0
3 Wood: Cobra King Speedzone/HZRDUS Smoke Yellow 70

5 Wood: Callaway Mavrik Subzero/Aldila Rogue White 70
Long Irons (4-6): Wilson D7 Forged/DG120TI
Short Irons (7-P): Wilson Staff Model Blade/DG120TI

Wedges (50/54/58): Callaway Jaws MD5 w/TI S200
Putter: Original Odyssey White Hot XG No. 7
Ball: Titleist Left Dash
