Interesting experience with m4 rental set

I am finishing up a vacation in grand cayman and felt the need for a round so I played 18 at the Ritz Carlton Norman course. I normally play ap2 with x100 amt and have played x100 for over 20 years (I’m 35). The rental set was all M4, kbs max 85 stiff shafts in the irons. It felt almost easy to hit these irons. Seemed to be basically point and shoot. I hit them lower than my irons and I think a comparable amount of spin (I’m a high ball, high spin player).

I enjoyed them so much I looked them up after the round, only to find they are a high launch, high spin shaft. I can’t get my head around why they went lower, but they did for sure. They were also easier to hit, not to say mine are hard to hit, but it sure was a whole lot easier to correct a bad swing.

Can anyone shed some light?

Better golfers typically and subconsciously adjust their swing to accommodate different shaft weights and flex. Sounds like you made the swing adjustment quickly. (ie - backed off a little)

Lower lofts and a spring face iron can drop spin, which could potentially equal lower flight.

I have a set of M4 irons that I originally ordered with PX shafts as an experiment. I also found them to be low-launch (very strong lofts) and low spin. PX probably wasn't a good shaft choice in these for me. I just re-shafted them with a higher launch shaft set that I had in the collection, but haven't hit them yet. They are definitely long, straight, and easy to hit, but the launch, spin and feel don't suit me. I'll play around with them for a while but will probably sell them off eventually.

I always thought SGI club head are made to have low spin/launch. That is why they are always paired with high spin/launch shaft.

are you comparing your 7 iron to m4 7 iron? or 30* to 30*?

I had this experience while visiting my dad and using one of his sets. At the time I played S+ C-Tapers in J15CBs. His set was Apex 16's with regular lightweight recoils. I played great, and hit a lot of greens that day. I adjusted well and just swung easy all day. What felt like a 3/4 knockdown swing produced beautiful shots. Was an eye opener for sure. I'm now playing recoil 110 stiffs in a Apex / X Forged combo set.

I would say the irons were a club longer with an easier swing and the m4 9 iron was about as high as my normal 6-7 iron.

I've had similar experience with playing lighter and softer flexes. I had a set of onoff forged 2011 irons that came with 65g r flex graphite shafts, and I probably hit them the lowest of all! I have no problems launching KBS Ctaper x.

Crazy stuff.

I would look at the loft of the two sets. The reason the 9 iron was flying the height of your regular 7 iron could be because the loft of the m4 is about a traditional 7 iron loft. Just a thought.

I had this happen to me. Played a round with a friend’s back up set of R11’s with graphite stock shaft. Never really hit graphite but they were light. Had one of my best days with them last summer. Reason was I slowed my swing down because I was afraid they were too light. Hit great shots all day. Never tried to go back and look into a set of irons in graphite but was a fun day.
