P790 9i Distance Issues

Recommended Posts

Currently having a lot of trouble with the distance with my P790 9i. I have the set from 4-9 and use a P770 PW. The loft is bent 2* strong to try and get the distance where I need it at 145y. My previous set of M2 Tour irons was 145y so I am very surprised to see that I cannot get the P790 9i to atleast the same distance. No matter how hard I swing it I can’t get more than 140 out of it. Checking the club face I’m hitting it in the center of the face (not high on face). My gaps with the rest of the set are 4-200y, 5-185, 6-175, 7-165, 8-155. The Pw is 135 so I should have the 9i right in at 145. Stock shaft DG105 S300. I’m not sure what else to try, contact is very solid but cannot trust the yardage.

My next step is to lengthen the shaft, as I have heavier wedge shafts (120) and 105s in 4-9 with no problems with any other club. The 9i is standard length like the rest of the set, but I will try lengthening next. Any advice on show much longer to go?

Lofts are correct. I have already lowered the loft a touch to see if that helped. Everything was check to be stock, and all other clubs in the set are as well and they have no issues. Just the 9i is the problem club. Going to look at getting it extended to see what that can do for me. Will post back when I get out there to test the yardage.

Maybe you just struggle to get the correct impact position with that club? Sounds funny, but I literally hit every club in my bag the right yardages but my 52.

8- 160

9- 147

PW- 135

52- 110 maybe 115 max

56- 100

60- 85

I really should be able to get the 52 to 120 no problem but it is a problem. Going to swap the shaft out to match my irons but it just seems to be the one club that doesn’t fit the “stock yardages.” Love it for chipping and partial swings though.

Not sure if this answers your question, but i've found the P790's to generally be inconsistent with yardages, as others have said. I don't fully trust i'll get a consistent number out of any of them, with the miss being long. Think it's partially related to the fact that I spin these less than my current gamers. Haven't given up completely on the 790's and will take them out again to see if it was just me.

Did you verify the last in the PW to make sure it is not strong? Also have you compared the spin of the 9 and PW?

Yes the set has been check for lofts, I just had a 1/2” extension put into the 9i and hit it on the range before my league match tonight. The range had a stiff breeze so I couldn’t get the best yardage gauge. Didn’t get many 9i yardages in the match today, but the one I did on a par 3 was pin high for a change, did leave it out right but was a positive outcome for that distance even with a less than optimal shot. Hoping the extension has fixed the yardage issue, or atleast it’s a bandaid for now.

I have noticed this as well, especially with thin shots which is common. Most of the time I am accurate enough for my liking. The extension I had put in has shown some positives tonight, so hoping to test it out more soon and see what I get.

Note that the stock lofts for P790: 7i = 30.5° / 8i = 35.0° / 9i = 40.0° / PW = 45.0°

Any chance the creep to a 5° loft gap (8i to 9i) is contributing?

Maybe there's something wrong with the P790 9 iron? Have you hit any other ones in the shop?
