Scotty AOP Newport 2 - refinish or nah?

leave it alone - it looks great as it is. shows character. rub it down with some baby oil or food grade silicone if you want to try and avoid more rust spots. either way - it would go straight into the bag.

Didn’t know food grade silicone would work. When I posted I figured there would also be some suggestions so thank you for that.

i've gone through multiple yellow cloths scotty cameron has specifically for these types of putters. they've gone dry and by recommendation a good option was CRC food grade silicone. i spray it on a spare yellow cloth and wipe mine down.

This the only thing I’ve ever used and I’ve never experienced any rust issues with my carbon steel putters.

“I have had many people ask what I use to protect steel putters, be it carbon or stainless. There is only one product I can recommend, and no it is not baby oil. It is a product from CRC and is a silicone spray. It is Electrical Grade, Multi Purpose Silicone, Lubricates, Waterproofs, & Protects With A Thin, Clear, Non-Staining Film, For Metal & Non-Metal Surfaces. It is a food grade silicone spray. It is non oily, it does not loosen paint, it is dry in a few seconds, it does not react with fertilizers or other chemicals you encounter on putting greens, it does not smell, etc. Yes there are other similar products out there but many have qualities that I do not like and which I think can cause problems.”

You can order it through this link.

Thanks. Love the no smell part. I did have a carbon putter in the past. I used eezox which seemed to work but the smell gave me a headache. And from what I remember it could mess with the paint fill. I didn’t have that issue but read here it could happen.

The milling stood out to me so maybe you’re right. Any way to know for sure? Weighing? How much is typically lost when a putter is remilled?

And I wasn’t even considering remilling.

Thanks for the input and anything else you can add.

The face milling is a dead give away for the refinish (the fish tail pattern that goes off to the toe)

also the soft edges of the neck and the engraving of the neck looks very shallow on the face side.

How much weight is lost is totally dependent on how beat it was before the refinish

This one looks like it had quite a bit of weight taken off to me. Only way to know is to weigh the head. Might be a good idea for you to do, and easy enough to do as well.

Even though it's been refinished, it's a very sweet putter

Thanks. As bad as I suck with my hands I can do that and just did. Was too curious to wait. It’s 320.5 grams.

Yup

I thought it would be light, but at that weight, this might have been refinished twice.

Just throw on some lead tape, and put that baby in your bag!

Leave it alone, just keep oiled or Silicone spray. And no on the lead tape, have someone remove the head and install a 10 gram brass weight just inside the shaft with epoxy. Heck send it to me and I'll do it pro bono.

Thanks. Didn’t know of that. I think I can do that if I wanna go that direction but thanks for the offer.
