Barbasol Championship

The field

300 FedEx Cup points for this opposite field event. But very critical points to a lot of players here.

SoF is 18 up from 11 last year. It will have a better field than the event in Puerto Rico. The first place points for the OWGR are the PGA Tour minimum of 24.

$3,500,000 purse with $630,000 going to the winner

Jim Herman is your winner at -26.

He got a tip recently from his former boss.

https://www.pgatour.com/news/2019/07/19/presidental-putting-tip-working-wonders-herman-barbasol-championship-keene-trace-golf-club.html

He does get the full two year exemption for winning.

However, he only had 16 FedEX Cup points heading into today. The 300 from this win only moves him up to #134. He still has work to do to make the FedEX Cup Playoffs.

Kelly Kraft, Sepp Straka, Austin Cook and Martin Laird all moved into the Top 125 with their high finishes.

Darth since the FEC started has there been a player that won on tour in a given year/season but not made the FEC playoffs? Due to the FEC point differentials between regular and opposite events for a win it would need to a player that won an opposite event. Crazy to look at Hermans results from this year+ and ever expected him to win an event. His results recently have been very Smylie-esque. Hope he paid his caddie correctly. ;)

Jim Herman graduated from my high school a year before I did and also went to the same college I did and I noticed he has the University of Cincinnati emblem on his yardage book. Don't know him but glad to see a guy who went to the same schools as me get win #2. Especially considering he was a few weeks away from losing his card.

It's a WGC event though, I think his top 10 gets him into the opposite field event (Barracuda) which he was probably getting in to anyway.

You’re right. Forgot that it was a wgc event. Lol. Why work you have that the week after a major?

I found two.

2013 Sanderson Farms winner Woody Austin had 326 points and finished #137.

2009 Puerto Rico Open winner Michael Bradley only had 306 points and finished #139.

2008 Puerto Rico Open winner Greg Kraft finished on the number at #125 when the playoffs were over. There have been quite a few close calls, but you can only see the final results these days so some of them moved up in the final standings,

I can see the need to have a few of these type events to give the Korn Ferry graduates a place to play. They can't get into a lot of the invites and more prestigious tournaments as a no name coming on tour.

What gets me is the 40 somethings just hoping for another payday while biding their time before they can hopefully play the champions tour. No offense to the Trahans or Pamplings of the world but in any other sport they wouldve been sent to pasture years ago.

Honestly, I can recall that events like this have been played seemingly forever. When I was a kid getting into golf back in the 1970s, I remember an opposite field event played during Masters week. I think it may have been called the Magnolia Classic? Okay, I just Googled, and was nearly correct! Called the "Magnolia State Classic" in its early days, and is actually now the Sanderson Farms Championship.

What's wrong with giving these guys a little more opportunity? I feel the same way about opposite field events as college bowl games; not a huge fan so I probably won't watch but the competitors enjoy the opportunity and people enjoy watching it on TV. No one is damaged as a result of these events.

The issue with this is that the tour exists to give its members opportunities to play. The Open isn’t a pga tour operated event, and the majority of tour players are not exempt into the field. Giving “the rest” of the members an official event to play in when there is a sponsor and a venue available is their duty.

LOL

Lets get rid of every professional tour other than the PGA Tour. If the scrubs on the Korn Ferry Tour can't qualify for the big league PGA Tour events, they shouldn't even be allowed to play golf

Im pretty sure Jim Herman is appreciative. Guy has busted his ass all season, made only 3 cuts, but now is fully exempt for the next two years.

For some of these guys, its THESE events that are the life-changers. Just like how a major is a life-changer for someone else.

Jim Herman would argue that with you....He missed the cut in sixteen of nineteen events and was thinking of quitting the tour. That $630K will go a long way in paying some bills....LOL!
