Modus 125 wedge shaft questions

Recommended Posts

The 125 iron shafts are simply the best steel shafts I’ve ever used. The problem is that now my wedge shafts feel lighter than my irons, something that nobody really recommends and I’d rather not have.

I guess my question is, if I can handle 128 gram iron shafts..will I notice the step up to 133 gram wedge shafts? The only other alternative is moving from S200 -> S300 (3 gram difference), which I’m not even sure is worth the time doing. Or I could throw PW iron shafts in the wedges? Anyone have success doing that?

I have pretty much always played the PW shaft in my wedges. I'm doing that right now with my NIppon 130s.

I think Nippon seem heavier because they have longer uncut lengths and they list the uncut weights. They probably weight closer to 128 or so when they are all said and done.

Have never played a better wedge shaft than the 125. I am a Modus 130 guy so they work very well for me in terms of weight and feel. I still have yet to try Modus 125 in my irons but I am a tweener on flex and haven’t had a chance to demo it. The 125 wedge doesn’t feel heavy or stiff at all for, it is extremely smooth but also well-balanced and solid at the same time. Distance is very consistent and it also seems to spin more than other wedge shafts in the same loft. Price is the only thing stopping me from putting it in all my wedges going forward.

I really like the Modus 105 shafts in my JPX 900 Hot Metals. But they are mighty light in the shorter clubs.

Do I understand the Modus range correctly that the "Modus 125" has a similar feel and trajectory and flex profile to the "Modus 125" but with some extra weight?

I'm pretty sure "Modus 120" and "Modus 130" are both a different type of feel and profile than my 105's...

Correct. 105 and 125 are similar, with the 125 playing stiffer and heavier. Although, they feel lighter than an S300 for what it’s worth. Unless you swing crazy and need X7/PX 7.0 I have no idea why you wouldn’t play Nippon. They’re the best shafts I’ve ever used and I’ve used them all.

I’ve always been pretty much “a shaft feels like a shaft” as long as it’s something in the usual R or S range and not too light.

But these Modus 105 are just really cool feeling. Like you, I am really into it. Not sure I’d like anything else at this point.

But 103g shaft in a gap wedge. That’s pushing things for my quick tempo.

125 wedge is basically an S3/S400. They actually weigh 131-132g, have similar soft handles and get linearly stiffer towards the tip. However, the Nippon is apparantly much smoother. I haven't hit it so I can't comment on that.

You won't notice and will be fine. I'm playing the 120x's and use the 133g wedge 125 in my LW and also use 126g TX shafts in my SW and GW.

How do they stand up on full shots? I like the S200/S300 wedge shafts in a lob wedge but not a fan on full shots with my SW and Gap wedge they feel too soft and spinny

How do they compare in launch and spin? Coming from project x 6.5 in the irons do they hold up on full and 3/4 shots without too much “bend” and do they ballon at all?

Short of x100 I don’t tend to get along well with s400 and below in the DG line, so that’s my disclaimer on my opinion and experience below. Hate the stock DG wedge shaft which I think is usually an S200. The S400 helps a little but it still spins less and launches lower than the 125. So, comparing those two, the 125 is just leaps and bounds better which is why I mentioned they were like apples and oranges for me. Higher, straighter, and more spin from the 125 without any ballooning or other funky flight, just wants to go straight and provides lots of stopping power. Also see the same thing on shorter shots and pitches - it can be flighted up or down and just stops where you hit it. It’s really the whole package for me and wish I’d have made the switch sooner.
