One Man Scramble Tourney?!

Recommended Posts

You ever get the urge in a tournament, after a poor shot, to just throw another one down and try again? I know I do...

I just played in my club's One-Man Scramble tournament. What a freaking fun format! We got two shots every time, with the exception of off the tee on par 4s and 5s. There, if we hit a 2nd drive, we had to take it. Otherwise, we got to choose between two shots every shot. I'm a 5hcp, so I rarely get to sniff a sub-par round. Today, I shot 65 (-7), won some money, and again, had a fantastic time! Sure is fun to see a low number next to your name. Has anyone ever played a format like that?!

I played in a one-man scramble when my club-assigned partner no-showed. So I was playing straight-up stroke play against a two-man scramble team. (And many such teams for the event).

The only fun thing about it was the back 9, where I played out of my mind and beat the scramble team of an 8 and 6 cap I was paired with as a 10.3 single.

We have one at my home club once or twice a year, it is a fun tournament. One can get tired easier as it can be similar to playing close to 36 holes.

The format is as OP described, have to use the second shot if you did not like your first shot.

(OP HERE) Thanks! I putted really well. If there's a strength to my game, it's my putting. I made 3 or 4 putts over 20 feet on my second tries. Giving yourself the first read really helps. It also helps on approach shots to know you have a second swipe at it. I ended up taking my first shot on the approach on most holes, but I'm guessing the confidence of knowing I have another shot helped.

You should absolutely give it a shot - maybe some random evening playing by yourself for 9 holes?

Sounds fun but yikes how long would that take unless you did it over the course of a few days and every guy went out as a single? Imagine a group of 4 guys, each taking 2 shots each, every single shot??

I think the biggest help would be to putting though, I know that's where I'd make up the most strokes. For the most part at my HC (12) if I hit a shot on the green, my next one is likely not going to be much better... But having what is essentially a read of my own putt, every single time, would be a massive help. I'd probably be 1 putting way more often, and be wayyy less likely to 3 stab.

Played once or twice years ago. We had the rule where you if you hit a second shot you had to use it. (Every shot.) The second "tournament" ended the format as a few guys were brutally slow. They would want to go and see where their shots ended up and had a hard time making decisions. (Higher handicap types.) And lots of times their second shots were much worse.

It was a long day. We played in threesomes - most of us had our own cart - still a 5+ hr round.

We did this last summer when a bunch of guys wanted to do a 2 man skins scramble but we couldn’t decide on teams. We got two shots everywhere but if you hit a second tee shot you had to use it. I won the bulk of the skins thanks to eagles on three par fours (putted one, chipped one, and holed out from 105 for the third). Unsurprisingly, I have been trying to organize another day with this format but haven’t had much luck convincing people. We played in threesomes and only took 4 hours.
