Soft Player Iron Options?

Jtarno23

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for new irons. I have played Mizuno for 15 years and picked up a set up MP 18s this spring but I don't think the set is for me (I will be putting up for sale sometime soon combo set up MMC Fli Hi, MMC, and SC with Tour Issue X100 Shaft all SST Pured). I personally have not had the best results and I believe the MP 18s have a harder, clicky feel that I do not want. I actually have my old set of MP 59s in the bag currently until I decide.

I recall the Srixon Z785s were good in the fitting and I will be trying them again. The fitter like selling Miura/Epon and he handed me a club i wasn't aware of, Itobori?! Now i know he said they were super pricey but anyone have any experience with these?

Any ideas of options for soft butter feeling player irons. Thank you

Bridgestone tour b’s feel very soft and solid! They don’t get a lot of love and might be harder to find, but as far as feel goes they are right up there.

+1 to this. Best ball speed and softest feel I got in my fitting. The 902CB and 623MB will be among some of the cleanest toplines you will see in the game. I haven't hit the MB but I have hit the 902 and the 1031 and opted for the extra forgiveness, which is a big plus.

I was just the opposite, hit them great in the fitting bay and again on the range when I picked them up. Took them to the course, and couldn't hit them at all. 1 out of maybe 20 (i was alone so dropping balls to test them out) was a solid hit. The 1 I did hit felt amazing though haha.

I played Mizuno MP-5's for two seasons, coming from MP-64's. I purchased an MP-18SC 7 iron, and I'm glad I didn't shell out for the full set. The MP-18SC just didn't have the same soft feeling as the MP-5. The MP-5 isn't quite a blade/muscleback like the MP-5, but rather an MP-64-like cavity back with a channel back design. 'Don't think you can find a club as soft that has as much forgiveness as a cavity back.

Still giving them a go. I got them based on results during a fitting. Only had 1 range session and 1 time on the course (practicing by myself). Surprising to me, I hit the 785 much better than the 585 during indoor fitting (problem is they only have a 7 iron). I assumed going in the 585 would fit my game much better.

I picked up a combo set of Z785s and Z-Forged a couple weeks back - like @BCULAW they felt a bit clicky at first but as I got used to the irons and my swing settled down (no doubt helped by the fact that this is my first fitted set) the feel at impact improved massively. They still don't feel as substantial as the MP-14's they replaced but then again that set had some ungodly stiff shafts, so that could also be a factor.

Bridgestone's J15CB's are the softest forged iron I've played. Still gaming them.

I also play the MP-5s currently. In the past 3 seasons I played Mp-32, MP-64, srixon z745, z965. The srixons are forged with 1020 which is softer on paper than the 1025 in the mizunos. however, i felt that the srixons felt 'clickier' and attributed to a more dense feel. If you want soft, I'd suggest the older mizunos like mp 5/mp 64s/mp 54, etc. In my experience they felt softer than the more recent offerings.

+1 for J15CB, did some test along with Z965 on SF110cw over the weekend. J15CB felt much better (on solid strike for both). Both forged from 1020 carbon steel.

Yet another MP5 person here.

Hard to find it all in one stick I suppose, but this does it for me. Great feel and a forgiving design without a hard to clean (nooks and grass filled crannies) cavity.

That said I can’t wait to see the MP20. mP14 was my standard for feel, and the 20 borrows a lot of the look.

The X Forged do have nice feel,

And are a blast to play

I had the MP18's for a few months when they first came out, but couldn't get used to the feel. Went back to my AP2's. Thought I wanted the Apex pro's, and bought them. Liked them ok, but they felt pretty harsh on anything not in the center of the club. Now playing the 919 Tours. Very soft feeling club IMO. To me they feel more like the MP64's, and the MP5's than the MP18's did. I hit almost every iron after I decided to return the Apex's. It came down to the z745's, and the 919T's.

Currently game Cally X Forged and they really do feel soft. That was the deciding factor for me over Mizuno mp18 sc’s. However x forged have too much offset and it has been driving me crazy, causing me to miss left more often. For this reason I will either switch the mp18 sc or try and hold off for the mp20’s.

Interesting comments.

Still gaming the 18mb, find them too marshmallow at times.

900T are my back up and those are definitely inline with the 64s on feel.

Demo the 785 and 919T last week, would agree on the previous comments.

Also demo the Bluprints multiple times, although not the softest t feeling irons but the truest performing irons in terms of launch, spin and dispersion.

Got the Callaways 18mb two iron on order, those are soft comparable to my 18s which is why I am buying them. Strike isn’t an issue.

Some nice options listed. Epon AF Tour CB (or its predecessor, the AF 302) is very soft, similar along sole to Bridgestone J15CB, which has a slightly longer blade and also feels nice. The Epon is deceptively forgiving, easier for me and notably softer than the Miura CB57. I hit the Tour CB today and it is a fine club. Compact, about like the Srixon 785. I am a big fan of Srixon’s clubs, too.

The AF Tour blade also would be one to look at, and I concur on the Callaway Apex MB. Also, the Srixon 965 is Endo forged and easy to hit MB. Some of these are not the latest models and can be picked up at nice prices.

Miura are soft but the feel is very different... It's soft while still feeling firm with a lot of feedback. IF you miss the sweet spot by even the smallest amount, it does not feel good. If you just want a ball-melts-into-clubface kind of feel, I think that P760's or Apex Pro fit the bill pretty well, without murdering your bank account. I hit z785's back to back in a fitting with the 760's and I felt the 760's were softer. JPX 919 Forged were also very nice, so I would assume the 919 Tour's feel excellent as well, but I have not (and can't b/c I'm LH) hit them.
