Who uses a heavy driver?

A few years ago I added some lead tape to a Callaway FT-5, loved the feel, haven’t looked back since. These days buying heavier weight screws on eBay is standard when purchasing a new driver (just did it with the epic flash)

For those of you who also do this, why do you do it?

I can’t say I like a heavy driver but I add weight to basically every driver I use. I like the feel of head weight in the driver. Helps with tempo and the transition area in my swing. If the driver is too light or the balance is off I completely lose feel for the club and the ball goes sideways. I also use a driver at 44” or 44 1/4”. Adding weight is usually necessary and my normal driver headweight is 208-210 grams.

Agree that play length of driver is a big factor. I play 44 - 44.5” as through trial and error that it definitely my sweet spot. I am 5’9” and have shortish arms so I don’t know what I was thinking years ago trying to game a 45.5” stock driver. Anyways, due to shorter shaft length I will add weight to most driver heads, currently play rogue sub zero. I replaced front 2 gram weight with 8 gram, and have roughly 2-3 grams of lead tape in the middle/front of sole and that gave me the feel of the club head back. Lead tape has been there for 2 years and have not messed with it since, rogue sz is paired with GD tour AD TP 7x.

I think my current gamer is around D6.

Why? I am simply much more consistent with a heavier club. When it gets too light I lose a feel for where the clubhead is and get really erratic.

I don't know the exact swing weight of my driver but it feels in the D6 range and I love it. Had a Tensei Pro Orange which is an awful shaft for the price and felt like a feather before. I hit the heavier feeling club so much better, just more smooth and consistent and I know where the clubhead is at.

12 years ago I was a 95g X shaft guy and my driver was 44.75"

Today I play a 53g X shaft at 46.25" and it swingweights out at E0

Extra weights or lead tape .. whatever floats your boat

I am a HUGE fan of heavier swingweights right thru the set

My M3 has an extra 5g weight in it to bring the total to ~204g. I have an Attas Elements MK 7s playing at 45”, and swing weights out to about D6 or D7. Can’t remember exactly because it’s been a while since I’ve measured it.

All of my irons are around the same SW. I grip down a bit on all my clubs, and the heavier SW helps with my tempo.

Interesting find today when I got my driver re-gripped. Swing weight measured D8. Really surprised but I love the feel of it and have been hitting it so well. New grip dropped it down to D6 which I feel better about but hoping it doesn't affect my driving or the old type grip is going back on.

I love a heavier feeling club off the tee... I usually just go heavier shaft but might try to get a heavier head next time around.

I suppose I'm in the category of folks that use a "heavy driver". My 917 has the 18g neutral weight in it and two two inch strips of lead tape on the sole. I have also gone back to my Aldila Rogue Silver 80 in this as my ball flight is just better with this than it is with my Kai'li 70X. Both shafts give a playing length of 44.25". With the heavier weight, my swing doesn't get as out of whack in terms of tempo. Whenever I go to a lighter setup, I start spraying it like Ron Jeremy...it's not pretty.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just checked my SW after tinkering with a hand me down, Beat to crap, RBZ head. I put the Aldila RIP alpha 70 x-stiff in it, and decided to play it long to see if I could add distance without losing too much control...That experiment failed and I can’t keep it on the planet (probably due to lack of play, but at any rate, a club length I probably had no business playing).

In its original configuration, (46.75 overall length maybe?) it tipped the scale around E4-E5. I took it down to 44.5 and taped it to hell to get it back in the D5 range...feels much better, and can actually feel the head better than when it was in the mid E’s...can’t wait to play a round with it.

I have two drivers finally after trying just about everything. First of all for me, total weight of driver has to be a least 330g. My go to, straight driver is 343g and is 46” with midsize grip, swing weight d6. My long driver but more erratic is 45.75 and is 331 grams with midsize grip. I am 67 with 90 mph, light drivers go nowhere and can’t feel anything.

Heavy drivers rule.
