Chip shot madness

Talk to me, let me explain the set-up. 15 yards to the pin, short sided and have to carry a bunker. Ball is in very light grass, resting on wet dirt. I got a 54 with 12 bounce and a 60 with 4 bounce. Tight lie and wet, I hit the 60 and chunk it short. I have had this shot more than a few times with this crazy weather we have had all year. In tournaments I just say get it on the green. Anyone got any tips?

Take 54 and play it to past the hole. Being short sided regularly comes from bad course strategey

If you're going to chip it , open the club face a little and use your hands to swing the club head back and through along the target line. Your hands will work your arms and the lower body is stable.

Chip

To pitch it, open the club face a little and use your hands to swing the club head on an arc (the plane) so a little pivot comes into play back and through to create the arc.

Pitch

Yeah, don't be there. The problem isn't your current shot, it's the previous shot that allowed for this eventuality.

I agree with you. In this case I pulled my tee shot a little and it hit a overhanging tree branch leaving me 250 to the hole on a long par 4. I hit a 16 degree hybrid to this location which was a pretty good shot considering having to hit a low draw around the tree. The other most memorable was a driveable par 4. In both cases, had the ground been dry this is not a hard shot. But again, I totally agree that this situation should be avoided if possible.

I wouldn't have tried to draw a 16-degree hybrid around a tree from 250. I'm in awe of your skills if you don't think that's a hard shot. I'm pretty confident I would have nudged a mid iron down to 100 and taken my chances from there. But, that's just me. In your situation, I agree -- just get it on the green any way you can. A tight shot to the pin isn't very likely and not worth the risk.

Power chunk - see Monte Call Your Shot around 8:00 mark - perfect for what you face. Basically open face bunker play - on muddy think divot goes farther than ball - obviously you have places to practice this, lol. And hey, avoidance is nice to say but golfers need to have a plan when faced with all the situations that will happen no matter the skill level.

Can't it's on his Call Your Shot video - purchase only not on youtube - he demos it at his clinics and like I said it's just a bunker shot from sketchy lies as you describe - soft ground of some sort - remember him hitting a 30 yarder at Chicago like 4 years ago (we had rain so finally a muddy spot was not hard) - the divot was massive and went pretty far - ball plopped onto the green.

I like the sounds of that and with the ground being as soft as it is, I will give it a try in the practice area. I am an aggressive type so this has my interest. I will see how it works tonight!

Yeah definitely something to practice. I decided on the course was a great time try out the chunk and run (I mean how hard could it be) when I landed in a bed of wood chips. Did not fully commit to it and bladed it 50 yards over the green, almost took out a playing partner!
