Loose wrists?

Hey guys, played the round of my life a few weeks ago. Now I feel like I’m tense and trying to force a repeat of that. I tried loosing up during a range session and found some good swings when my wrists felt super loose. It felt like I was hinged until striking the ball. I didn’t see any distance gained, so don’t know if it’s me lagging. Just wondering if anyone else has felt that and if it’s a good thing or a bad thing? Going to have a friend video tape in a few days so I can see for myself.

Also, if someone knows, what exactly is it I’m feeling ? On a technical term? Is it just as stated above ? It seems to eliminate my block so it seems like I am finally turning my hands over more.

Hard to be specific w/o a video - but excess tension is rarely a good thing. BTW - you probably want to post those video's over in the instruction sub-forum - not here in the club tech sub-forum.

Hand tension leads to the wrist which leads to the forearms which leads to the elbows which leads to the shoulders. Find the grip pressure that enables you to control the club without creating tension up into your forearms. Tension kills your ability to use your hands, wrists and elbows naturally and forcing movement in those areas leads to other issues.

Need firm(ish) grip, but "oily" wrists. Not necessarily easy to do...

No matter what your skill level, the key to golf is consistency and knowing what your swings/clubs will do. Less tension generally means that you're not actively interfering with the natural forces of the swing. This should lead to a higher degree of consistency in your strikes and swing speed. When golfers try to "steer" the club at the ball, wrist tension usually is creeping into the swing, and this in turn produces variances in how you're delivering the club to the ball.

Strive for the least amount of manipulations in your swing movements and you will achieve greater consistency in your swings and your game.

I have exactly 2 tricks that I personally use to maintain proper grip pressure and keep my wrists involved to the correct degree (neither snappy nor late)

1) Bigger grips

2) I don't have the thumb of my bottom hand touching the grip during my backswing. I am well aware of how ridiculous this sounds, but you can't deathgrip something without a thumb. Grip normally to set up, lift the thumb back, return the thumb through. I have no idea what on earth possessed me to try something so stupid at the range one day, but I did at the start of the year and hit 10 straight butter-cut bombs. Haven't looked back, only do it with my woods.

There's a guy at my club (great player) who looks as though he float-loads the club and then drops his hands and "slaps" the ball. It's a handsy-looking impact/release, but it's in control. I'm envisioning what you're describing as the same action.

My right thumb is never on the club...just my right fingers with my palm resting against my left thumb

I struggle with that too. Perfect practice swing, feels great, soon as I put club in front of the ball, boom! Tension goes to 11 and I feel like Barkley taking my backswing. I think it's mental.
