Colin Morikawa, flash in the pan?

On a hot streak that doesn't include the putter!

Collin Morikawa's stats and where they'd rank on the PGA TOUR:

Scoring average: 67.9 (1st)

Greens hit: 74.1% (1st)

Birdies per round: 4.9 (1st)

SG: Approach: +1.42 (1st)

SG: Total: +2.29 (2nd)

SG: Putting: +0.19 (100th)

Maybe he was trying make a clever historical association to Colin's asian heritage and gun powder's "flash in the pan" from which the term originates, even though it was the Chinese that invented gun powder, not the Japanese, which is the source country for the surname Morikawa.

Yeah that is how it works. If you are a top ball striker you just need to putt average to win. Conversely you can be #1 SG putting and an average ball striker and potentially never win.

I don't follow college golf closely enough to act like I know the guys game but the ability to win golf tournaments is something even really high level golfers struggle with. He's already got more domestic wins than Tony Finau. I don't know enough about his game to know what his ceiling is but he was awfully impressive yesterday especially at the end. In his interview he sounded really polished; I'd buy heavily on Morikawa stock.

Hard to justify any argument that he could possibly even be a flash in the pan when he has a coming out party like that but right now, I am wondering how Cameron Champ is feeling. He was the next big thing just 9 months ago and no I am struggling to remember the last time I heard any discussion about him.

I think the poster meant flash in the pan was a dumb post title because Colin is obviously way too good to fade away quickly. The Chinese gunpowder history lesson and the Japanese course name were not necessary because everybody knew that already.

I didn’t know that... I always thought ‘flash in the pan’ had something to do with mining for gold during the gold rush. In full disclosure, I still looked it up to make sure you guys weren’t messing with me. I learn something new everyday. Thanks!

The fact that he has only putted about tour average and still had these results bodes well for him. OTOH, he has a reputation as only an average putter (but maybe he will improve playing pure greens regularly).

Not to take too much away from him, but the stats you quoted are based mostly on easier than average tour courses with weaker than average fields. Still, an amazing start he should be extremely proud of. Most impressive to me is the consistency- no bad weeks yet which isn't something many golfers can claim over a 6 tournament sample.

Not a bad start for the kid, and definitely will win some events here and there. Solid game to make a ton of cuts and a 20 year career. Champ doesn’t have that all around game unfortunately. But Woodland was able to hone his game. There is always hope!

He seems to have pretty solid tee to green game and is a decent putter. It's too early to tell, but in 2013 Gary Woodland won the same event and now he's a major champion. If he continues to play well, I could see him contending in majors pretty soon. He just turned pro in June and he already has 3 top 5 finishes including a win.

Not sure how much the Japanese media is interested considering he was born in and grew up in California.
