POLL - How much does your wife/husband/significant other influence your golf purchases?

Obviously there are tons of threads here mentioning significant others’ influence on golf-related spending. “Need to hide this one from the wife”, etc.

Personally, I get plenty of eye rolls (especially for classic putters) but that’s about it so far, so I’d put myself in the “a little” category.

So, just for fun, how much is your golf-related spending influenced by your significant other?

I think most of that stuff is tongue-in-cheek. But it must depend entirely on the financial situation at home. For me and my wife, we keep our finances separate - so no influence whatsoever.

If anything my wife encourages me to get stuff. That way all her Amazon, HSN, QVC, Zuilly, Crafters Companion etc. boxes that arrive almost daily don’t elicit any comments.

My girlfriend knows I have two things to not interfere with...golf and shoes. My two ho sports. Lol. I was lucky when I was married 13 years, she knew I was a club junkie so she let me have my fix.

Fortunately my wife plays so she understands a little bit. Typically I tell her I am looking at a certain club of set of irons (see Blueprints) and she will kind of let me know when it would be best to purchase based on college tuition and other things. Best part is neither one of us spends much on anything else so I can typically spend 500-1200 a year on golf stuff and not make a ripple. Sometimes I will roll clubs purchases into Christmas and or birthday presents as well. I get it. We are trying to save as much for retirement as possible while still enjoying the ride a bit.

Other than savings, my wife and I keep our finances separate. She works hard, earns her salary, and can spend it as she sees fit and vice versa.

If it passes $500, I let her know.. helps keep me in check.

Right now, none. But if I decide to go the membership route next year she'll definitely be involved.

My wife questions all of the equipment that shows up on our door but hasn't told me to stop. The only thing she has shut me down on is a Country Club membership but she has a point. With a 3 year and and 1 year old at home, I don't play enough to justify joining but she's knows it's coming.

My wife is cool with my golf "problem", however I do take into consideration our overall financial responsibilities before I make a big purchase.

My wife and I have an agreement regarding purchases over a couple hundred dollars..

No kids, only dogs to take care of, although they've been costing a bit lately! ( 6K abdomen surgery to save one's life. And just discovered 9 month old Lab has hip dysplasia )

I'm looking at some irons currently, but hesitant to pull the trigger even though she's given the OK.

I love my wife, she's the best!

To the best of my knowledge, my wife doesn't have a twin sister. However, after reading your post, I think she might, and it sounds like you are married to her.

I was actually thinking the other day, what would my bag look like now if I was single. In all likelihood, it would probably be exactly the same. I think I have gotten pretty lucky :)

My just asks “what did you decide you had to have this time “ and that’s about it. Always after the package arrives because it’s never discussed before I order

Adding to my previous statement... the only comment I get when I buy something new is "Good, that means you can sell the other ones in the garage now, right?"

I have been pretty good at asking "permission" but lately I have been buying without asking/telling. I have also been selling other items so it's like nothing happened right?

The wife steers clear of my golf expenses, as long as I can pay my way with eBay sales and flipping of stuff.

Pretty much all my golf spending is paid for by golf selling and doing medical surveys, so she doesn't care.

The plan for new irons next year might need a discussion though, we'll see how that goes...

I'm in the single, so ha, bracket.... but that means one income to cover running the house and my hobbies. So not as much free play money as one might think.

Just got engaged. The fiancee is starting to crack down on some of my habits.. I'm kind of a clothing junkie when it comes to golf clothes so she has definitely let me hear it a time or two. However, I'm not married yet so I do what I what to an extent.

Congrats bro!! Being married with a loving wife who keeps you in check is a lot better then being alone with 1,000 clubs.

My wife has a shoe and clothing addiction, so she understands my equipment addiction. She doesn't question me and I don't question her. We get along great that way. :)

Zero.... purses and shoes are a lot more expensive than golf clubs. Also, when you are a club ho of 2-3 year old models. The cost really isn’t that bad. I only spend $300 to $500 a year on actual golf equipment.

I voted for "A little" because I generally tell her what's on my mind and she's almost always cool with it.

My irons were used and my driver was a late model hand me down from the kid so my purchases aren't really that big.

Told her I needed a new rangefinder last night and she said "do it". Ordered a Precision Pro NX7 this morning.

A little because I always discuss large purchases with her, but her input is generally just to make fun of me. She knows golf makes me happy and is supportive.

That said, getting fit for clubs has really curbed my ho'ing.

You need to add another option,...."Less than 0".

The boss sometimes has to move around the inventory. Nothing is hidden.

My wife doesn’t give a rip about golf. She doesn’t know anything about clubs, what kind of clubs, etc. Whenever I discuss golf with her she rolls her eyes except for big things like when I won our Club Championship and when I got a HIO. Thus, I’m a club ho and she doesn’t even know what I’m doing. So at least I got that going for me. What she does get super pissed about is my golf shoe collection. I’ve got close to 180 pairs of golf shoes, close to 95 now that I haven’t even worn yet NWT’s.

I’ve got shoes stuffed everywhere in the house and garage and when she gets into those moods, she gets livid and the fire comes out of her mouth like Godzilla and I’m burnt to a crisp. She screams, “Why do you have so many GD golf shoes and you don’t even play golf anymore!!!!” I deflect and answer sheepishly......You do have a point there. I’ve got wolf grey AM1’s coming this Wed from NDC along with 2 NIke Golf California T-shirts for $157. Add more gasoline to that fire!!

I just got over a divorce DIRECTLY contributed to a Scotty Cameron. So all I can say is that I haven’t 3 putted in a long time !!!
