2019 Wyndham Championship

It is the final week of the PGA Tour's Regular Season.

Tour cards and a place in the FedEX Cup Plaoyffs are on the line in Greensboro.

Current Field

https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/wyndham-championship/field.html

That list includes the Monday qualifiers. Among those that failed to qualify on Monday were Julian Suri and Akshay Bhatia.

Course: Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design of 7127 yards and par of 70.

Fed EX Cup Points: 500

Purse: $6,200,000

OWGR totals are in

SoF is 243 which is a massive improvement from 2018s 170

First place points are 44 up from last years 34

In terms of tournaments played this year it ranks on spot below the 3M Open and one spot ahead of the Irish Open.

Why? Various reasons. A few are here trying to get a bonus from the Wyndham Rewards by finishing in the top 10 in the FedEX Cup standings at the end of the week. There are other prominent names here trying to get themselves higher in the FedEX Cup rankings because that first cutoff from 125-70 is a doozy. Some are here to try to get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs and one top 50 player is trying to keep his card.

The highest ranked players are

17 Webb Simpson (#13 in the Fed EX Cup standings)

19 Paul Casey (#8)

23 Patrick Reed (#50)

28 Chez Reavie (#14)

31 Hideki Matsuyama (#29)

37 Jordan Spieth (#67)

41 Billy Horschel (#47)

43 Cameron Smith (#75)

44 Alex Noren (#125)

48 our defending champion Brandt Snedeker (#32)

36 of the worlds Top 100 are in the field.

So the first big number of the week is 125.

Those that finish in the Top 125 of the Fed EX Cup standings get a spot in the Playoffs and all 125 are assured of a PGA Tour card and playing privileges next year.

Everyone near the cutline moved down a spot this morning when Collin Morikawa's FedEx Cup points became official. This could happen again if someone like Lucas Bjerregard, Doc Redman or Viktor Hovland wins. The first two will be PGA Tour members no matter what next season, but need a win to make this year's playoffs.

Here are a couple of articles about golfers near the cutline.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/major-winners-former-prodigies-and-vets-among-fedex-cup-bubble-boys-heading-into-wyndham-championship

https://www.golfchannel.com/news/bubble-watch-cards-stake-regular-season-finale

The most unusual is Martin Trainer. He won in Puerto Rico, but needs to move up 3 spots to qualify for the playoffs.

Barbasol winner Jim Herman is #138 in the standings and is not in Greensboro. There could be two PGA Tour winners that miss the playoffs.

The other big number is 200. Those that finish 126-200 in the FedEX Cup standings as well as those with enough points as non members will take part in the Korn Ferry Playoffs where they can try to get one of the 25 spots up for grabs for next year's card. Some in this group like Zach Johnson and Jimmy Walker still have other exemptions to avoid the Korn Ferry Playoffs. Martin Kaymer's exemption runs out after this season and he showed up last week in Reno to try to earn more points. We'll see if he plays in the Korn Ferry Playoffs if needed or heads back to Europe full time. Players in this group will also have some status on the Korn Ferry Tour at least if they can't earn a PGA Tour card for 2019-20.

Players that finish outside the top 200 such as Smylie Kaufman will only be exempt into the second round of qualfying for the Korn Ferry Tour.

I wonder when the last time Webb Simpson went into an event as the highest ranked player in the field?

Short of winning what does Hovland need to do to get his card for next year? A solo 2nd (300 FEC points) or a 2 way tie for 2nd (245) would do the trick. Does a solo third (190) get him his card?

Hovland sits at 173. 190 points puts him at 363 which is exactly the total Alex Noren has at #125. He needs a three way tie for second or better for 208 points and maybe a little help.

The one that stood out to me was a Patton Kizzire. Dude won two tournaments in close succession last season, and is about to miss the FedEx cup playoffs this year.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Rooting for Alex in this case, my local boy. Victor will easily make it next year on Korn Ferry.

And everyone thinks he’s finished, but if he ends up top 5 noone will be surprised either. Hes so much more fun to watch now than in the hey days. You never know what yore gonna get. I suppose including himself.

It's not so much that he's close to making it, but that he had such a stand out season last year and this year you're only hearing about him because he's a bubble boy. Golf giveth, golf taketh...

Martin Laird has found some form, currently T2 with -5.

The T6 and T7 in his last two starts has basically secured his status.

Playing on the Korn Ferry Tour worked out for his friend, fellow Norwegian and Oklahoma State Cowboy, Kristoffer Ventura. He won twice and will be on the PGA Tour next year.

Luke Donald (#191 FedEx) has posted a 72 and is currently sitting at T112.

I think he was on a medical at some point but not sure of his status.
