Apex 19 Hybrid - Second thoughts

Recommended Posts

So I have posted numerous times in other posts about preferring the feel of the gen 1 version of these (I have the 2, 3, 4 and 5). I got a 23* head early in the season and kind of passed it over as I didn't love the feel initially

Did a few nights at the range last week with some spare extra clubs, one of which was the gen 2 Apex hybrid. Seemed ridiculously easy

Last week I moved the 19 Apex (23* head) into my bag permanently and goodness ... what a club !!!!

2 day interclub event over Sunday and Monday and this thing is AWESOME. My club has the stock Catalyst in it at 70 in stiff at plus 1/2"

I was eating up par 5's and this club was also incredible on multiple occasions on long par 3's.

This is my 225 club and the 7w is now no longer a rotating specialty club in my tourney bag

Key findings:

- more anti-left than gen 1.

- longer by a full 10 yards than gen 1, Maybe 12.

- better out of the rough

- better for low rocket recovery shots where slices are needed

Late to the party as always

Mind if I ask where you got it with a +1/2” shaft? I also have the original 2/3/4/5 hybrids although I only game the 3 and 4 currently, and after finally seeing a good club fitter I know I need +1/2” for basically every club. I’ve been looking for used 19 Apex hybrids that are over length but haven’t had much luck.

I just had my fitter extend it when he converted the grip to iomic

I would soft-step the irons one time to get +1/2" vs extending them all

Great to hear!!

Sunday I hit mine 4 times, 2 off the tee on tight holes. And 2 miracle shot recoveries, huge slice off the tee with 212 over trees left on a side hill lie - NO PROB for this hybrid. On the green and putting for birdie. Other occasion, pull hook left, 220 under trees. Big hook with the APEX and on the green again. This club really amazes me every round, as much I liked the original I'm surprised to not see many 19' on tour.

I am still on the fence with the 2019 Apex hybrid. I am trying to get more comfortable with it, and I hit it solid, I just don’t really care for the feel of it. With the jailbreak tech it can be hard for me to tell exactly where I strike the ball. Obviously extreme toe and heel strikes are noticeable, any impact remotely close to the sweet spot feels the same. Other than that it performs well except for the really low spin shot I get every when I don’t want it. Off the tee it is amazing. The evaluation process will continue as I’m not sure I could trust it playing in a tournament.

I learned that it didn't feel great with range balls, different story with TP5's or Prov1's

The gen 1 does seem to be in a lot of tour bags, for non Cally guys as well of course

First gen Apex was just a really consistent hybrid, and you would get consistent carry distance and spin with it. That is of course if it was fitted to you and with the correct shaft. Players on any Tour or at that level just want to know a club will give them whatever yardage they are trying to hit, and do it every time. I think that’s why those guys/girls are reluctant to change it out.

  • 3 weeks later...

I play the gen 1 and I love it. Only problem is I can get a bit hooky with it on bad swings.

The gen 2 appears to have quite a bit more mass behind the ball when I looked at it in the shop and more of a typical hybrid shape. It’s still small by definitely more rounded a larger sole

Not sure I like the idea of jailbreak in a hybrid as when I had the original epic it was difficult to know where I hit it on the face. Sounds like it would go as far as my 3 wood

Man I just received my apex 19 (3H) from PGA Southlake after being fitted for it and can hit it 240-250 draw/fade anything I want to do with it. Paired with an AD-DI 95x that thing is a monster. Needed a 240-250 club and found it.

I absolutely love the 2019 version with Jailbreak. This tech is legit. The catalyst 70 stock shaft is a very cool looking low spin shaft. This is as hot as a driving iron imo but much more versatile. I can hit my 3 hybrid 220-230. So im easily picking up an extra 10-15 yards from the first generation. In my short sample size I have not hooked it once yet (lol here comes the jinx). I love the new finish and slightly different shape . Im actually considering buying the 2 hybrid and taking my 4 wood out of the bag. Great job Callaway!

But it’s playing longer than it’s stated loft for everyone. Right shaft and length, you’ll be longer than nearly any 16-17* hybrid. Don’t let 1* sway you. Get the right shaft and you can lower launch even more and make it what you want
