Best Sub-$100 Public Courses in Missouri

macedan

Recommended Posts

Hey all, as you can probably guess by the title, I am looking for the best public course in the state of MO......within value restrictions. Northern MO admittedly doesn't have much too much to offer outside of Mozingo Lake, but what would the Missouri members of WRX have for recommendations for sub-$100 rounds that provide quality golf. I'll add the only KC course I've taken in thus far has been Stone Canyon which I did greatly enjoy. It seems it can be hard to find courses with ample amounts of bunkers and water hazards here in the state.

What was your take on Eagle Knoll? I've read its nice especially for central Missouri, but have heard it's not quite up to par in recent years.

Looks swell, Swope and Shoal have been on my radar in KC, but Tiffany Greens has also piqued my curiosity. Any information on it?

I am a member at Crown Pointe GC (formerly Eagle Lake GC) in Farmington, MO. I doubt it is the top public course in Missouri, but it is a solid test of golf. We held the Missouri Mid-Am 3 yrs ago and when we opened back in the 90's was 4/5 Star w/Golf Digest.

Lot's of votes for Creekmoor Swope and Shoal it appears. Sad to hear about Tiffany Greens' condition. Does anybody look on the mogolftour site for information about Missouri Tracks? It's an older gentleman out playing and reviewing every course in Missouri, even the ones with sand greens, and for the courses I have played that he has already reviewed his notes have been fairly accurate.

Creekmoor was the first thing that popped into my head, assuming they’re still “semi-private” with decent rates.

Just played it a couple weeks ago. It’s under new ownership now. They are starting to get it back to what it was like when they first opened. Condition was pretty good, not great but not awful either. They are letting the native areas grow out again after having them mowed down the past few years. I live in Columbia and my favorite course in the area is Tanglewood in Fulton.

Honestly outside of Branson I don’t think I can think of any public course is over $100?

Tanglewood is a fun course. Isnt there a course near the Lake of the Woods exit in Columbia? I graduated there in 1988 and there was a little course out there. Dont remember much about it though.

That’s one of the city courses, ideally enough called Lake of the Woods. Probably the better of the 2 city courses, but I’m not a fan personally.

My father and I just played Winterstone for Labor Day. Excellent value, very well maintained (with the exception of some turf patches on some holes, but with floods and droughts in the same year I look over it), and scenic views on every hole. We played the Red's just under 6,200 with 133 slope. Not too terribly tight, but very healthy rough and ample amounts of trouble if you veer too far off course. I would easily play here again.

So I just played Aberdeen Golf Club for the first time on Sunday - it's outside STL off of 44.

Very impressed and I really enjoyed the round of golf for $57 on a Sunday morning. The layout is tight (which is a very nice change from the usual Midwest course routed through a damn neighborhood) and flat so it's definitely walkable. There is one hill (up 10 and then down to 11). It's a "links" style just like Gateway but it has zoysia which makes it play differently - they also had a lot more shaved/fairway areas and a lot more mounding around the greens so if you miss the green you'll have some really interesting shots (a few shared greens too - which they pull off without it seeming contrived or stupid) . And the layout is better and the Par 5s are actually gettable. I find the par 5s at Gateway all very tough with small greens and no bailouts around the greens - these par 5s were much more enjoyable to play and wanted you to go for it in two.

It just hosted the Metro Amateur Champ. Also snacks were $1 and the people working there were nice. I've played Old Kinderhook and Gateway National I play a lot - I put Aberdeen up there with those courses. It does flood easily - but even with 12" of rain in the past week the course was totally playable - some bunkers had rain in them still but it definitely drains well. It did play LONG when I played on a cool/misty Sunday morning with no roll out. Be really interested to go back and see how it plays when it's a bit drier.

I play eagle knoll a couple times a month, back in the 2000's it was a really nice course for the money but now its just average. Lots of other courses in my opinion that would offer a more enjoyable experience. If you get around the Columbia area Tanglewood in Fulton is good course, my favorite in the central part of missouri.

I'd say Creekmore or Old Kinderhook is one of the nicer public courses in Missouri. I think Old Kinderhook is around $70-80 after 2 PM. Branson Hills is a nice one if you play in the afternoon for around $80. I know there's few around St Louis area that is affordable. Rivercut GC in Springfield is a fun course but I heard the greens are little fuzzy right now.

I played at Tiffany Greens couple years ago, it was in awful condition. It used to be in awesome condition.

I just booked a 'stay and play' at Crown for next Friday, super excited.

In case anyone is interested about the layout of the back nine at Aberdeen. I’m standing on 11 tee. 10 green is right in front of me. Beyond 10 green you can see 12 fairway, then 13, then 14, and then 15 is hard to see but it’s out there. And then 17 runs right along the low line of trees. 12, 13, and 15 are all strong par fours, 14 a gettable 5, then 17 a harder 5.

Of those who have played the two courses at Paradise Pointe in Smithville (Posse and Outlaw) what was your perception of the courses, and if you were to recommend one which would you choose?

Eagle Creek owned by Downstream Casino is BEAUTIFUL, a real test, and immaculate. Located in Joplin. It use to be called Loma Linda and though a nice layout, it did not have enough budget. Now owned by the tribe who seems to have no limitations with budgets and it is pretty amazing and with very little play. Well under $100.

Nice, let me know what you think. Dustin (the pro) is a buddy of mine, let him know if you need anything. Are you staying at Tradition Inn or at the hotel next to the course? I word of warning, we had some trouble with our practice green. The upper 1/3 of it burned up in the rain/drought/rain period we had. But the rest of the course made it thru the summer pretty well.

Staying at the SureStay Best Western which is like 2 miles from the course. It was one of two hotels they offered with stay/play package. We were gonna stay at the place right on the course however what attracted us to this one is the bar/grill attached. The hotel at the course apparently has no food options. We are playing 2 rounds Friday and 2 Saturday then heading back to STL. Figure by time we get to our hotel friday night, shower, etc it'll be nice to have the restaurant right there instead of having to drive out and find somewhere. I'm sure it'll be nice enough for two guys to shower and sleep for the night.

Quick question for you on the course. We will probably play the Blue or Whites. Are there any holes that you cant use driver on? My driver is probably in the 250 range assuming it hit it well.

I am only asking because I can't hit a 3-wood off the deck but if I know I am playing a course where I will have to hit a couple tee shots with it I will put it in the bag.

Looking at GPS it looks like there aren't any of those holes here?

Also i read on some reviews one guy said the Blues played like they were 7000 yards, is that true? If that is the case maybe ill just stick to the whites.
