2019 United States Amateur

The oldest championship in American golf started today at Pinehurst, North Carolina.

36 holes of stroke play today and tomorrow at Pinehurst #2 and #4 will reduce the field of 312 to 64. Then 18 holes of match play playoffs until the final on Sunday at 36 holes. This year that final will be conducted on both courses with #4 in the morning and #2 in the afternoon.

An introduction to some of the top players here..
https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/championships/2019/u-s--amateur/articles/2019-u-s--amateur-at-pinehurst--inside-the-field.html#returnable

The average field age is just over 22 and there are six players in the field that are age 15 or younger.

Scoring

TV coverage of the match play rounds starts on FS1 on Wednesday. FOX will have coverage on Saturday and Sunday.

The winner of the US Amateur gets a spot in the US Open next year. In a rule change, he will get the spot even if he turns pro. The winner also receives a spot in the British Open if he maintains his amateur status. The top two finishers earn a spot in The Masters as long as they stay amateurs. The runner up also gets a spot in next year's US Open. However, unlike the winner, he will still need to be an amateur. Anyone that makes the quarter finals qualifies for next year's US Amateur provided they stay an amateur.

Always fun to see some fresh faces and I enjoy the match play format. Although the final can drag on if the match is not competitive.

One of my favorite events every year. If you are able to go I highly recommend it, very easy viewing experience and top quality golf usually.

Fun to follow when you have a local kid in it. Trent Phillips is from 5 min away from here. Looks like he got off to a slow start. Maybe he will get it together coming in.

Very happy to watch and get a feel for #2 and #4. Going to play it the week after, hopefully they cut the rough!

Really enjoyed the Women's Am. Wish there was more being televised this week for the men. Would be great exposure for the game.

Apparently, the runner up gets an exemption to the Masters and The US Open in 2020. Definitely some perks to just making the final.

I went today. It was a great time. More players on the course than spectators. Good opportunity to see some of the future stars up close.

Looking at this course , it only has 2 par 5s. I’m guessing 2 of the par4s are played as par 5s by regular folks ? Yep two par 4s over 520 yards. Woof.

I recall vividly the match between Ricky Barnes and Hunter Mahan. Interesting to look at the list of winners and runners-up over the years to see who has made it to the tour and is still here.

I remember seeing Fitzpatrick for the first time when he won at Martis Camp. He looked 12 years old and has barely aged a day.

Fun seeing how good these kids are.

I really wish there was more coverage of these events - top level amateur golf is a great watch, but maybe harder to monetize. Offering it on YouTube or something globally would be a great idea and a good way to raise money via advertising.

His brother Alex was his caddie and 13 at the time.

Alex is now playing the US Amateur and currently looks good for the top 64 with a 142 total.

Coverage has grown significantly over the last few years on FOX. It's on FS1 every day Wed-Sun every year just like the Women's Am. And the NCAA Championship. I recommend setting your DVR an extra 2 hours each day.

I do too...US AM/JR Am for boys and girls is covered now on FS1, but would love to see Western Am, Pacific, North/South, NE Am, etc...would be cool for golf channel to pick these up and even cover some of the bigger college events.

Good for his little bro, that’s awesome!

I remember Matt hit this 3w into a par 5 during his US Am victory, it was a **** of a shot and I suspect he hit it exactly as he wanted. He turned back to little bro and gave him a wink with a wry smile. I always remembered that moment, pretty cool.

I am caddying this week and it’s a lot of fun, #2 is playing so tough. My player will make the cut, so we are on to the matches.

The USGA we site has some video available prior to FS1's coverage that starts tomorrow. They are about to show the 27 players in a playoff for the final 3 spots.

Local kid finished early yesterday at +4, texted our $ games group text saying course is baked out, fast, and the wind was picking up. Said he’d get in, watched him go from 90th at the time to T44. Bhatia makes it at +4 as well, Vilips shoots -5 to get in at +2. Hagestad and Eckroat two other names I recognize. Cole Hammer looks to be in today’s playoff.

Birdie from Van Holmgren in the 2nd 4some. So he's through at least to the next hole.

I was in town last week and the day we played Pine Needles we let a single through, it was Benjamin Jones from England playing a practice round there because no. 2 and 4 were closed for a couple of days. We chatted him up a bit after our round. Nice kid, so I'm following to see how he is doing in the tournament.

One of the guys doing the coverage on periscope said the greens were 14.5 on the stimp. Yikes.
