Why so little M5 talk?

nickosbad

Recommended Posts

I like to have 2 drivers so that I can switch between when I fall out with one! Currently have a Cobra F9 HZRDUS Smoke and 2 weeks ago I bought a Ping G410 plus

Long story short....I’ve sold the aping as I really didn’t like it and am now considering the M5

Anyone still playing it and happy with it? There’s very little chat recently about them!

It is is very low spin. Probably more suited to the high speed players. More forgiving options out there for the majority of players.

My M5 is the best driver I've ever played.... absolute clutch fairway finder that's forgiving and long.

M6 won for me. M5 was fun but, my ideal settings with the mix of distance and forgiveness had the weights in the back. So, I tried the M6 and had more or less, the same results. No regrets there.

The M5 is a great driver but, it does the same thing your G410 and Cobra F9 does. I wouldn't waste my money if I were you.

Most found a favourite driver in the last 5 years since the tech changes. With several successful models released and many discounted, there is more choice than ever. OEM's make such a good product, get the right shaft and settings - you can swing most of them well. Its really what you like looking at and feel now.

New models get hype during pre-release then it quickly dies.

I heard from a fitter that it was slower than most of the drivers out. People were preferring the M6. That's based on his fits for people. My buddy had a M3 440. We thought he was getting too much spin but it turned out he was getting 1500rpm range so the head was super low spin(for him at least). Ended up getting fit into a G410 Plus with Diamana DF.

I'm a 100-107 driver swing speed guy, and the M5 with a rogue silver was the best combo for me in my fitting this spring. It's a fairway finder for me, and gives me more than enough distance compared to previous drivers I've had in the bag.

I've never been a TM guy, but had some winnings I needed to spend. Bought the M5 with the Tensei Orange S shaft. I hit it once before on the range, and liked it, but never thought I'd own a Taylor made club. I'm finding it longer than my Epic flash, but not quite as forgiving. Sounds a little more muted, but not in a bad way. I tried the Hzrdus smoked shaft in it, with the 70g, and I've got the 60g in my Epic. I needed something a little lighter, and went with the Tensei 60g. I really like it so far. It looks good, sounds good, and it's a low spinning driver compared to what I'm used to. Only thing I've noticed so far is that when I have a bad shot, I'm a little further in the woods than with my Epic flash.

Longest driver I've owned paired with the Pro Orange.

Not the most forgiving on the market obviously but beats everything on looks/sound/feel for me. I think good players will find way more than enough forgiveness with it. If you're all over the face or don't want/need low spin, there are much better options.

I really like the HZRDUS Smoke that’s in my F9 which is one reason I’m leaning towards the M5

Previous “back up” driver was my 2017 M1 HZRDUS Yellow so the M5 would be mor3 forgiving than that surely?

Don’t like the sound/feel of the Epic Flash and don’t like the shape of the TS3

Leaves the only real options as M5 or maybe the 410LST (I hated the Evenflow black in the 410+ so would need to try the Tour 65/75)

G400 LST is another consideration

This was my experience with the m5, too low spin my misses were not as good as some of the other offerings. I tried one with a fujikura 2.0 tour spec 7x and the ball was noise diving. Even a diamana bf had a very flat flight. F9 or pings lst was much better i nterms of overall performance. If your producing 175plus mph ballspeed I could see it being a great option but I'm 165-167 and it wasn't consistent enough for on course golf .

40 years of golf and the M5 is the best driver I've ever had. I'm a relatively slow but fairly high-spin swinger. 10.5 M5 at 11.25 with basically stock weight settings gives me the best & most consistent trajectory and roll out I've ever been able to produce.

Was fit for the shaft in my M3, which was replaced by the M5 when the M3 broke. I’ve had to loft up one click from my M3 but it is just as straight and slightly longer. I couldn’t even hit the M6 without hitting a hook so the M5 is perfect for me.

Aren't the new M7 and 8's coming out soon? I'm only half kidding. Drivers tend to get a lot of love when they are fresh then it fades. Laws of GolfWRX.

The M5 is the best feelings and sounding driver I've ever played. It does tend to launch high but is also low spin, so it can result in some monster drives.

Not sure it is "longer" than my old 16M2 tour issue 8.5, but it certainly is more accurate.

One thing no one has mentioned - this is the MOST adjustable TM driver that's ever been released. The settings _significantly_ affect the performance of this head - more so than any on the market I'm sure. With enough time, anyone can get this head dialed in which is part of what makes it so great.

m5 is the best driver I've ever played!! im like you and have 2 drivers on hand always... with the m1/m3/m5 usually marketed as "better players" drivers, it isn't the case for the m5. Its extremely forgiving!!!! Big upgrade from the m3... IMO its the best looking and sounding driver. You can feel where you strike the ball and always has a muted sound

It naturally launches higher than anything ive played but also very low spin which gives it amazing distance. if im being honest its not the fastest driver ball speed wise, but it is farther due to optimal launch and spin numbers. Also dont sleep on the m6. Its every bit as good and in my testing their identical in spin and launch...obviously someone who likes to tinker with weights tho should get the m5

For those who haven't been on the site for a long time, somewhere around the Taylormade era of the face paint, hashtags and "ballzier", TM became sort of a site-wide running joke. Couple that with the unrelenting fanboy-ism that came out of the kingdom trips around that time and I think a lot of people were turned off. It seemed like every thread that was started to seriously discuss a TM product was met with dozens of lame jokes about when the next product was coming out, etc. It has cooled down a lot since then but the TM stuff doesn't the loyal worship that PING and Titleist do, or the child-like excitement that Callaway seems to incite in some.

So, as to why there isn't more "M5 talk," I think there is a little bit of a history behind it. It's nice to see a few other people on here seem to agree that it's probably one of the best drivers they have made and deserves a little more recognition. For those who followed the TXG driver shootout, I think it was funny how they kind of had this predetermined attitude that the M5 would fall out after a round or two, and no one really wanted, or expected, it to win. But, for pure distance, it was the winner. And the dispersion wasn't bad either.

Prior 2016 M2 user.. 95-100MPH swing speed, not a big hitter, not a high spin player either. I tried to get along with a G400 Max, then an F9 Speedback but none could kick the M2 out. Decided to try an M5 head on a whim.. everything I liked about the M2 plus moveable weights to keep me entertained? Sold.

I've had my best season driving the ball ever since. I've gotten along with it so well I picked up an M5 3w and have no regrets. First time I've kept a 3w in my bag for any period of time.

Love the TXG channel! I think if Matt spent as much time with the M5 as he did with the g410 he would really end up liking it and hit better. Both of them fully expected the g410 to win from the beginning b/c of his comfort level and being custom fit for it already..

Like you said it was the farthest and was pretty accurate, but they never did a proper fitting with the m5 like they did with cobra and ping. (obviously im biased towards m5 here lol)

But yea as someone who has played super quad, r11, SLDR, r15, first gen m1, m3, m5....I think by far the m5 is the best driver TM has come out with in 10+ years. I went through a custom fitting and hit every new driver and the m5 was the best overall for me. Dispersion wasn't even close with the other drivers.... Yes 2 other drivers had faster ball speeds, but the most optimal numbers and accuracy were from the m5.

My backup is the M6, and the same issue. The left hook is the miss with M6 for me, even despite putting a little hot melt toe-side and lead tape on the toe. Very long also when flushed, but with the M5 Tour I can only hit a bad shot left with a garbage swing. It just wants to go high and straight and long.

I second this. I was struggling to find the right shaft for my M5, but it came alive with the Pro Orange V2 proto.

M5 is really on my radar but I wasn't seeing that much better balls speeds than my '17 M2. It does feel and sound better, though. Seemed to be easy to hit straight even with a less than excellent shaft fit for me, I'd love to try it with a shaft I use. My buddy has the M5 Tour 9.0 and I think it is just way too low spin for him. He says he loves it but I watch it fall out of the sky and barely get 20 yds off the ground. It seems to be REALLY low spin.

Like mentioned earlier, I think if you have a driver from the last 5 years you can count on, there's not much reason to switch. Playing the best golf of my life with my M2.

Great post and echoes my experience, although I'm seeing equal or maybe even better performance from my M3 440 head. Without exact specs and identical builds, I may just chalk this up to variance between the two heads. I am now intrigued by the M5 Tour head as I'd love to combine the slightly better performance that I get out of the M3 440 with the better look, feel, and sound of the M5.
