Very Strange PayPal Situation

So I’m involved in a precarious PayPal situation. I’m fairly confident I’m not getting scammed. I will not disclose any names or screen names involved so don’t ask. I just wanted to share this crazy situation and make you aware of what can happen.

First off I’ve never had anything like this happen. Been using PayPal and eBay since 2003. I’ve had hundreds of transactions across many forum platforms from hunting, Jeep , Nissan Titan, Ford F-150 forums to name a few. Never an incident.

So here’s what’s going on.

Back in May I sold a putter to a member here. Same day I sold a Cameron item. Shipped them both the same day. Updated tracking numbers on PayPal. Next day putter buyer tells me I shipped to the wrong address. I look it up and I flip flopped the two tracking numbers when I entered them in PayPal. So I sent him the correct tracking number and all was good. I called PayPal and had them switch the numbers for me. Fast forward to July and I get an email from PayPal that the putter buyer started a dispute. Login to PayPal and the money has been taken out of my account without any notification. I contact the seller and he says he has no idea what’s going on. He replies back that afternoon and says his bank flagged the transaction as fraudulent activity. So I call PayPal and was on hold for 2.5 hours. Finally speak to someone and they said since it was delivered and I have tracking information showing delivery that they would close it out and ruled in my favor. Fast forward to yesterday and I get notification that the buyers bank ruled in his favor. I haven’t had time to call PayPal and see what’s going on but this seems very strange. I will say the buyer has been very helpful and always responds promptly.

Anyone had this happen before?

I had a similar incident (minus the tracking issue) a year or two ago, oddly the exact same time frame. Sold a guy a putter in May and randomly in July got a dispute notification. Contacted the buyer and he said he didn't do anything and that he received the putter with no issue, but his bank account might have been hacked. I asked him to take care of it on his end but never heard back, so I called PayPal, explained the situation, they ruled in my favor and I never heard anything of it again. My guess is either he or his bank has suspected his account got hacked and your transaction got flagged. I wish I could tell you where to go from here, maybe start with PayPal and see what they can do with the bank, as I'm assuming the bank won't talk to an outside person on the issue. Perhaps have your buyer contact their bank as well, seeing as how he's already been in contact with them. Best of luck.

Yes that’s what he said. He thinks he got hacked. PayPal gave me my money back in July but I’m afraid his bank is gonna take it back again. It is frustrating for sure.

Has he contacted his bank, and have they offered any explanation? It seems like the buyer should be able to notify his bank that the transaction was kosher, and they remove the flag. Or just let it die and re-send the funds when they are back in his account. Tough situation, as it seems (to me) like the buyer can accomplish the most, but you are the one that is feeling the effects.

I know you don’t suspect foul play, and don’t want to divulge the seller (rightly so, at this point). But, just to add some context, what is the buyer’s history on this site? Tenure? Is he an active poster?

Yes he is an upstanding member here and been very helpful. He said he contacted his bank and told them that this transaction was cool and to take care of it. PayPal has returned my money but I’m afraid the bank will take it out again. They overrule PayPal.

If he’s already reached out to his bank and it’s been straightened out, I’d have to imagine you’re in the clear. The money PayPal replaced your account did not come from his bank account.

If the dude has the club and is a stand up guy he can always send you the money back via gift regardless of what the stupid banks do.
