T-200 vs New P790s Discussion Topic

Hi all,

Just making this thread so we can discuss the highly coveted T-200s vs New P790s, as I know many people are struggling to see which one to buy (like myself) and hoping everyone that gets to try them both can chime-in on this thread with their feedback and comparison between these 2 sets.

I hit the new P790 alongside the T200 last week ; both 6 irons .I found the distance on both was a within -1, 2 yards overall, ball speed , were almost the same. The T 200 had slightly higher apex and came down about 3 degrees steeper and surprisingly felt as soft as the hollow P790 with speed foam.I am getting fit for the T200 this Thursday by the rep and will advise.I am partial to the modus 3 105 and the Nippon 950 gh but we will see.I really like the thinner top line of the T200.

I never had issues with my 790's holding greens, even down the the 4i. The issue becomes more for lower speed players that don't generate enough ball speed (and thus height), because these irons won't spin as much as blades/player's irons.

The profile of the 790 looks WAY better at address and in the bag than the T200. 790's setup more like a players iron with minimal offset.

Everyone needs to get custom fit for 790. My first shaft the ball flight was great but the ball would roll over 20 plus yards with a 7 iron.

Modus pro 120 stiff shaft took care of that issue.

I hit a 5 iron on a par 3 198 yesterday and the ball hit the green and stopped with no issue.

Im a 12 handicap and have no issues with the New 790.

For me I just have to get my distances set with short irons since I have the irons for 4 days now.

Agreed on all accounts. When hitting the stock DG S300 shafts the ball flight was not controllable. I went and got fit and put the Project X LZ 120 shafts in them and ball flight is very controllable, not too high and I played on Sunday and had no issues holding greens with the them. It is also important IMO to get the correct ball with these irons. So if you dont play a ball that spins a lot you may want to look into using one. I use a ProV1x and all of my approach shots into greens would stop near their divot with little roll out. And FWIW I am a 11 handicap and a so so ball striker. The P790's fit a large large range of golfers

+1, I never understood the argument myself about 790's not holding greens. I have put about 10 rounds on mine since picking them up recently and I haven't noticed any lack of grip on the greens with driver speed right around 102-105 mph.

Was the fitting on GCQ or outside? Was it hitting to a green either way? I've noticed in any fitting I've had with GCQ they really tend to over estimate roll out. My guess is maybe the default setting is to a really firm green. I got fit into 760's and hit my 790's first. Every shot that hit the green I would see 10-15 yards of roll out and honestly I never even saw my 4i in real life, roll more than 12-15 *feet* past the pitch mark.

When I do any fitting for any club I pretty much ignore roll out completely, even on driver. Get my carry numbers consistent with proper landing angle for my ball speed, launch and spin.

are these set up to blend with another model? The one thing about "hot" irons is the 8-w distance controls......> @peterrod said:

Outside using Trackman hitting range balls to a 173 Yardage marker.

Learning from youtube and other forums all I cared was the carry number and a comfort level with the shaft.

My bag is 5-AW with P790.

I will have a new Ping G410 5 wood 17.5 Degree that should fill the gap between my Cobra F9 driver(12 degree head loft -1.5) and my 5 iron.

I will do a wedge fitting next year at a grass only facility.

ANother iron in this profile is the Mizuno MP20 HMB. It's actually better IMO than the 790 but profile is slightly larger. Feel wise the HMB wins hands down.

I have 4 round on my T200s and they are an excellent iron. I oldthe original 790s and am not looking back. The most impressive feature of the T200s for me is their ability to check up and spin back on the greens distance wise they can hang with the 790s any day. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I prefer the thin top line of the T200s

I’ve played the 2017 P790s for almost 2 years now. Never had an issue with them holding a green.

Isn't the question with the original p790's catching a heater/flier and going over the green not necessarily rolling out?

A guy in my weekly group has these and while he hits some beautiful looking iron shots, I wouldn't say distance control is a strong skill. Could be the player, could be the club.

TM put a heavier tungsten weight on the sole of the new P790s and it’s heavier to help with consistent ball speeds across the face to reduce fliers. That said nothing is going to fix a wet, ball sitting in the rough from flying an extra 10-15 yds

I tried both of these out yesterday. I thought 100% I would be ordering the T200 but ended up ordering P790. The looks and forgiveness were great. Even on terrible swings with the P790’s I was impressed.

I do think that the T200 had better feel with clean contact. I could have gamed these over my i500’s. The forgiveness on these two irons are better in my opinion.

I was really impressed with the P790’s when I had my fitting for the T200’s. Im going to be going back before I pull the trigger on new sticks.

No issue with the New P790 holding greens. I have irons 5 through AW in a Nippon N.S Pro modus tour 120 stiff . I hit a 5 iron on a 205 yd par 3. My ball hit the green and rolled a little. Short irons stop right next to the divot. For me the only flyer would be out of the rough but thats normal. Its important to get custom fit for these irons. I get a lot of comments of wow your ball flight is great and man your irons look sweet. Still debating on a 4 iron

I find it hard to believe that a certain shaft won't work in a head. It is most likely people that are not properly fit into the shaft that are having issues.
