Just can't seem to close the face

4yr golfer here. Game has seen ups and downs. At points attributable to back issues.

Back issues gone and some days play solid golf, and other days I can't close the face for anything.

I can trace the woes to a change in chipping technique a year ago, which remains effective. Pre-close and set face, back and through, never getting above the waist.

Now my full swing is severely shortened out of habit, and I'm fanning the face open on the takeaway. When I work to keep it shut, I'm hitting miserable top shots.

Old flight was a small draw, new flight is a fade or shank when I can't close the face, which is basically every time out.

This has been the most frustrating period of golf for me. Severe regression of full swing despite short game keeping the scores under 100.

I also changed grips at some point, went to midsize then back to standard, but I wonder if I need smaller.

And the club twisting in my hand is making me do a death grip. Not helping the inability to close the face.

Very frustrated. I think I need a whole new grip.

My takeaway is ok. Nothing exotic. I take it back outside to neutral and then hinge. Sometimes I don't make a very full turn, and video looks like I'm mopping the deck, but I can fix it.

Weight shift to lead side is conscious and not too bad.

But some days nothing works and the club twists and I just can't get the bat on the ball at all, and if I do, it's that awful and ugly little trickle to the right.

No current video, but what in the hell?

A problem I figured out that I had after years of thinking I needed to try harder to get the face back to square was that I was in fact over-rotating the face and hitting the majority of my strikes in close to the heel, which was causing big pull fades and slices. When I started to open up the face a little just before take-away I found I was getting much better contact when I came thru and much straighter shots.

OP I would check out Adam Young’s website for some pointers. If you google “nail drill” that might help you keep it simple

Can you square the club face on a little pitch shot? Could you hit the ball with a square face at 10% speed? If yes, what is the point at which you can’t? Might find some answers there.

How is your grip? If you do nothing else but strengthen the grip by a knuckle or so (or just close the club at address and take your normal grip) your club face will be more square at all points of the swing

Closing the face isn’t your issue at this point.

You need significant change to your backswing. Going to require the help of someone who knows what they’re doing and not a tip from this thread.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.

Yeah the video sucks, but the swing is so off it's probably not one where the angle makes a lot of difference.

I'm probably gonna get rid of it it's so hard to look at.

This. This. This. Montes videos will sort you out. But, my man, take them in baby steps. Practice practice practice at home, on the range, and most definitely on the course while you're doing a round. Rehearsal, repetition, and videoing yourself will change your game. It won't be quick but, you'll learn.
