What Loft is Your Putter?

Had a little experiment yesterday where I took my old Mizuno TP Mills Workshop II out for a round.

The head is around 332gm and loft is 4.5 I think. Anyway, had a pretty good putting round, 31 putts on grainy bermuda greens.

One thing that stood out was that I was getting a really good roll on the ball and from 5-10ft off the green I got the ball much closer than with my normal gamer with 3* loft.

Now wondering if I should adjust the loft on my BB1, as I have struggled getting the ball to the hole from off the green with it. It seems to get "hung up" in the grass a lot more.

I know that Cameron has said for quite a while that 4* was the optimal putter loft.

What are folks on this forum using?

I was an off the rack Cameron user for a better part of 17 years. Late 2018 found the artisan makers and tried one at 2°. What an eye opener with an adjusted lie angle. Crazy what happens when you get fit instead of trying to make your current putter work. Currently 2°, 68° lie angle, and almost standard 34".

Similar to @8overpar, I got fitted and was surprised by the results. I'm 2 degrees of loft with a 72 degree lie angle at 34.75". I had been using a 4 degree loft putter but lowering the loft has helped exponentially with getting the ball rolling more quickly and staying on the intended line.

I use putter from off the green on tight bermuda alot, how does 2* loft work for that kind of shot? Also, do you forward press when you putt?

My Betti at 3* rolls great on the greens, just struggles with the grainy grasses around the collars.

If it’s off the green it’s rare for me to putt it. If that’s the best option, I will not forward press as I normally do. I’ll let that 2° help. If I get the slightest hang up on my takeaway I’m good as dead. Even collar putts, I’ll hit the middle of the ball with a wedge vs all out putt.

4* on all my putters except for my SeeMore which I keep at stock 2.5*, since I use a slightly different technique with it than my other putters.

SAM fitting recommend 6 with my forward press. Been putting a better roll on it since going up to 6 since then. Haven’t seen too many people go with more than that.

Our course keeps the fringe and fairways cut tight so I use my putter a lot .

I wouldn’t think many went with more than 6*, but I seem to remember reading Phil Mickelson has 7* or something like that.

I had a couple of mine checked today and while my gamer has 3*, the one I used yesterday was closer to 5*

Standard 3° on the Odyssey and 4° on the Cameron

SAM putt fit twice, both time 1*.

Did a putter fitting at TrueSpec last week and they bent my BB1 down to 1*. Was amazed at how much better the roll was. Would basically get started rolling straightaway now instead of the pretty heavy backspin I was putting on it with the 3* of loft it had.

3.5 degrees here, that loft works great for me as long as I remember to keep ball in middle of my stance. Sometimes i will set up with the ball a little to far forward, old habits can creep in time to time.

Just a smidge over 3. Call it 3 and hook. But one three putt away from 4.

My very first putter is an old Ping Anser 5 clone that I putt with in my office all the time. It's a long-neck face balanced balanced blade with 1 degree of loft. It also probably weighs 330g or so. I love the roll it puts on the ball. It feels like it gets rolling immediately without any skidding or jumping. That's probably attributable to the lack of loft.

My putters are all whatever comes stock, so 3 or 4 degrees in my Jailbird Mini, 7 with the armlock, and 2 with my Yes! I do wonder what sort of roll I would get if I bent the Jailbird to 1 degree loft, but I don't have the guts to do it.

Interesting comments from those who have been fitted on SAM systems. Almost all have lower lofts, but can I assume this is tested on a tight, green-like surface?

I play a wide variety of courses and grasses, but mostly bermuda and poa on and around greens. There are a few bermuda varietals and some bent grass on occasion.

On the smoother, tighter mown grasses, 3* works great and I don't get skid or hop. However in my little experiment the other day, my putter with 4.5 degrees really seemed to "get up" on top of the grass better than the 3* one, especially fro just off the green. Got me to thinking........ I might bend one of my other putters to 4.5* and see what happens.
