What’s up with all the new balls

It goes back to the saying "a fool and his money are soon parted." Almost anyone can get a bunch of balls with their logo on them and sell them as the next big thing. They could be okay. They likely are crapola. Stay with the tried and true until proven otherwise.

Why would anyone not like variety? I enjoy trying the new offerings, Snell is excellent for example. Pricing is very aggressive as well. If you find a ball in your cartegory that works and it saves money why wouldn’t you consider it??

Honestly, when they get under $2 a ball it gets interesting. Somewhere around $25/dozen is the price you can almost always find last year's urethane models from one brand or another somewhere on eBay. The real aggressive pricing is the $20/dozen Srixon deals or better.

Although I’ve never hit any of them or even seen one, I have to imagine that these are more than just generic balls with logos stamped on them. I’d think they all are unique balls with some r and d behind them. Although I could be completely wrong and there’s probably a place you can go in China where’s there’s thousands of slightly different balls and you can pick one and slap your logo on it. Is that’s what’s happening? If so it still doesn’t explain the abundance of balls being advertised all is a similar manner in the last handful of days. Unless this store in China just opened.

Other than Snell, a bunch of these companies seem to be buying up who knows what production and slapping a logo on it. They still may work fine for a lot of people but the quality (or quality control) probably isn't the greatest.

Facebook is using your browsing history to suggest ads. I guess there's a lot worse things that could come up than some golf balls.

It would likely be this. That other website found a "bargin" box that looked like the same ball on the outside and when they cut them apart, there were 8 completely different balls out of the 12 or 15.

Change your Facebook and browser settings to eliminate as much tracking and ad suggestions as possible.

Facebook tracking pixel. You can see if a pixel is on the page buy installing "Facebook Pixel Helper" in the Chrome store. There are a number of Chrome extensions you can use to monitor tracking pixels. Sometimes, the URL can give you a hint if the company is using a tracking code as well.

Funny, I think it was Vice I got an ad for. So I wrote a comment stating that they simply take other balls and put their logo on it. My comment was the only one they didn't respond to. If you want to go that route, just by the Costco balls for way cheaper. I do have a bit more trust in Snell, but really, after the Titleist experience and members talking about how much better the QC is and that they do their own production, I can see why people wouldn't trust anything else.

I think much of the current hoopla over golf ball QC is far overblown but I've read so many people claiming that Titleist still use some sort of X-ray machine to examine every ball (or at least every urethane ball) that I'm inclined to believe they really do.

Do other manufacturers do the X-ray thing? Or is that just a Titleist idiosyncrasy?

I played Titleist ProV1s from the time they came out until this winter. Switched to Vice this year and in terms of performance have seen zero difference - yardage, spin, feel, etc. I will say that the cover is _slightly_ less durable and shows wear just a bit more quickly, but given the price difference, it doesn't really matter much to me.

X-rays only capture the ball in one dimension. You could take a ball that looks perfect and rotate it 90º and it could be way off-center. Hopefully Titleist and others get a couple of perspectives before giving "OK."

I've likely cut apart 100 different balls in the last little while. Oddly, the only top level ball I've found off-center was a ProV1x. You literally needed a micrometer to measure it, but it was off slightly. Some of the cheap ones showed covers of varying thicknesses, but by and large, they all seemed ok. Not to say that they didn't have inconsistencies in the densities of the layers, so I couldn't say if they were poorly weighted or not.
