New Iron build

I just finished building a set of irons, and am pleased after their first round. This is the third set I have built, and it only took 24 hours to put them together. The basic tools needed are a vice, hacksaw, and sandpaper. I am able to fine-tune my iron's to specs I desire that are not so easy to do when buying a set from a retailer. Loft , lie, offset, are a few specs I can control with heads I chose when selecting an iron head. Sure you can select those specs when purchasing from a retailer, but the choices are very limited. Usually manufacturers keep all their clubs standard length and lie, with a lot of offset. That is fine if that is what you are looking for, but you pay a very high price buying name brand clubs. The MCS 75 Blue iron shafts are a spineless shaft with a mid kick point allowing me to keep the ball a bit lower in trajectory. As most golfers know the shaft of your iron really dictates golf ball performance. So by selecting a particular shaft I can get the trajectory I want instead of what a manufacturer might force you to have. Basically, I fine-tuned my irons the way I desire, and below are some of the things that were important to me:

= 2* flat

= less offset then my last set

= 1* more loft throughout

= mid kick point

= no shaft spine

= Aesthetically pleasing

= tip end trimmed to r/s stiffness

Below are the main three components of and iron, and that being the head, shaft, and grip.

I cut all of my iron shafts according to the spec sheet and the swing weight of my 8-iron is a D3. I didn't get involved with moi because I felt that if I followed the procedure I followed everything would fall in close enough. I am sure moi is important to lower handicap golfers, but for a 14 handicap golfer I am satisfied. This is the same shaft and procedure I used on my last set I built because I was so happy with that set. The reason I built a new set is I wanted a little less offset and a slight bit higher Loft on the wedge end of the set. I would imagine a set of Callaway or TaylorMade irons would be two to three times as high in cost. I have used them once now and they feel great.

The TS2s are a great club. Very affordable for a Forged, multi piece, foam injected club head.

Re: the OPs post, Monark makes some nice, affordable club heads. Building your own clubs is very satisfying. Be careful...before you know it you’ll have a frequency meter, a bending machine, a shaft puller, a flux capacitor...

I agree that the TS2 is a nice club, but I'm not sure I would call them affordable. Certainly cheaper than purchasing an iron with comparable construction from an OEM, P790 for example. I was fortunate to get a set of almost new TS2 heads for close to half price. I'm just not sure how many TS2's they are going to sell when people look at the price relative to the DBM, PTM and other Maltby iron heads. Maybe its just me, but the pricing on those is where I'm at for component heads, even considering the more complex construction of the TS2.
