Modified Superspeed Golf

SEP1006

Recommended Posts

First off I hope this is in the right forum. Anyway I didn’t want to hijack the other multi-page thread on the Superspeed Golf.

Question, has anyone modified this and still had good results? I’m talking about either skipping the kneeling swings, non-dominant swings or changing the amount of swings or order or whatever?

If so please elaborate.

I’m currently not doing the protocols due to working on mechanics for a upcoming tournament but I got my best times following this protocol

https://www.jasonglassperformancelab.com/2018/04/25/coach-glass-speed-training-protocol/

Imo you can mix and match any exercises you wish but if you start out with a lot of complex movements in the beginning you won’t have anything to switch to when you start to plateau. The beginning protocol is just to get you started and use to swing fast as possible with movements that you probably have done at some point in the past.

I remember reading on the other thread about guys who for whatever reason didn't do the kneeling or some didn't do the non-dominant swing for whatever reason. I was just curious to see if they had stuck with it and what their results were. I particularly don't like the kneeling one but maybe over time will get used to it.

I don't do the step thru swings, but I still do both sides. Still on phase 1 although it's my 2nd time through.

Reason I don't do step thru on either side is because by this time in the season my body needs a bit more rest than earlier in the year. Adding 18 100% swings 3x per week started causing me to get a bit sore in the shoulders so I stopped them and just do the first half. Still seeing results.

However, last year I did do the full phase 1 protocol for 6 weeks and saw huge gains. Perhaps there's some muscle or CNS "memory" involved and I don't need to re-do the entire Phase 1 again to get back to where I was. My "issue" with SSG is that if you're a guy who is practicing and playing golf somewhat seriously (so.. most days of the week) adding in ~60 dominant side 100% swings per week could put your body over the edge. It might not for young college/pro athletes who recover insanely fast, but for even me a 30yo guy, has trouble recovering later on in the year.

If I want to do a full SSG protocol every week, I basically have to cut back to only playing 1x per week and only practice short game stuff... no other full swings on the range.

That's a pretty good reason!

I find that if I play a lot of golf (on vacation for instance) the days I do the SSG protocol and then play, I'm fine, but the next day my speed is wayyy down if I play.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

When I first started it I experienced this. Then took a couple weeks off and really focused on form to keep this from happening. That worked good for a while then I started experiencing issues with both wrist hurting really bad, kind of like a sprained ankle. Read a post on the other thread that helped me with this and I have since re-started with very little soreness,

Right now I am doing it M-W-F. I play / practice Thursday after work. Basically play by myself on purpose and hit 2 shots each shot, then when I take the balls off the green and practice chipping. Then on weekends we play 36 - 45 holes every Saturday and Sunday.

The only thing I was considering changing in the protocol was the non-dominant swings. I'm obviously not an expert on the theory behind it but really don't see how this helps. I'm sure someone will chime in and disprove me.

Pretty sure it has to do with opening the other side up, because you can only swing as fast you can stop yourself if that makes sense.

If not for this, it would at least just keep your muscles/nerves a bit more even. I played baseball all my life until i was like 24. My right lat, mid back... basically my entire one side of my body is slightly larger and also tighter than the left. It sucks.

As far as being larger ( muscle wise ) on one side I wouldn't have this issue. I work out 6 days and have for more than 15 years.

If you don't want to do the kneeling swings, they say to swing with feet together as a modification (see the comments below the level 2 protocol description at https://superspeedgolf.com/pages/training-protocols).

I tried the Jason Glass protocol for a few weeks. I personally wasn't a fan doing the smooth heavy swings before the light sticks. After you get warmed up, they feel like a waste. I do like the half kneeling swings though. That said, I moved back to the regular protocols and have been progressing faster.
