Ping 710 irons

Here comes the Boom

A lot of it was people bought them that shouldn't have. Most of the early adopters thought they were going to be the i500 basically and when they came out as they were, aka a SGI iron, many who had pre-ordered, bought online sight unseen, or just swallowed hard and bit the bullet ended up hating them. Myself for example, I ordered G700 4 and 5 and i500 6-P, and G700 4-P showed up with all the correct specs. Jury is still out on who messed up, the retailer blamed Ping, while Ping blamed the retailer. I wasn't overly irritated as the thought of going more forgiving was intriguing. Ultimately after about 4 rounds and a full winter of indoor practice I concluded that the 4 and 5 irons (moreso the 4) were perfect, and the 6-P were pretty straight but not overly long. It could have been shaft, the swing change, something, but I wasn't getting the same results I saw with the i500 when I demo'd them. Ultimately I sold them for basically what I had paid (took advantage of some promos at the time) and moved onto something that better suited my needs (flatter flight, less spin, less draw bias).

For sound and feel it never bothered me much, I expected a hybrid-style iron and that's what I got. It was high-pitched, clicky, and a bit noisy. Again though, anyone who demo'd them seriously (not just one or two swings with them) would have known this going into it. For me it was more of a lack of performance vs. what I had tried that sent them down the road for me. I still do wish I had that 4i though!

I adopted right when they came out. Went for a fitting and we compared my previous irons (588 Altitudes) to the G400's, i200's, G700's and the Cobra F8 irons.

For me everything was about the same until we put the Modus 105 shaft into the G700's which seemed to wake them up. I instantly gained about 5-7 yds, a higher flight and more spin over my former gamer irons. Yes they sound different, but to me no different than alot of the modern GI irons like the G400/410, Steelhead XR, TM M series irons, etc.

You get used to it quickly and honestly don't realize it until you hit another iron.

I've been gaming them for almost 2 seasons now and still enjoy them. According to Game Golf I gained a little in approach shot accuracy and the distance gains at my fitting held up on the course too. To double check I put my 588's back in the bag last week and I was about a 1/2 club to full club short compared to the 700 distances I see.

My only cons with them:

1) Wear/Look of the frosted finished. About a month in, they looked really scratched up so I removed the finish with a green scotch brite pad. They have looked the same pretty much ever since with about 80 rounds on them.

2) Offset - I know Ping irons always have a lot of offset but coming from the 588's which have very little offset this is an adjustment. I don't notice the offset as much in the 8i-UW but in the 6i, it's sometimes tough for me to get the alignment right. I will say though that I don't fight a hook with these. The hook is my big miss and these keep the ball going pretty much straight with minimal side to side movement. Sometimes I even fade the ball which I never fade the ball with my other clubs.

3) The long left flier - If I get short with my backswing and come over the top with a closed face the ball will end up a good 10-15 yds long and more left than I anticipated. This seems to happen alot with the 8i and 9i. So something to watch for.

I think if I had to do it over again I might opt for retro lofts just to bring my shot height and spin up a bit.

so wait, you ordered a mixed set of 700's and 500's and got all 700's and the retailer and or Ping didn't make this right?

The 700's came out 3/20/18, so the Ping 18 month cycle they 'usually' follow should put them out in Sept, but I haven't heard a thing.

There was another Ping thread recently where I thought somebody mentioned that they were having a hard time beating the ball speeds of the G410 iron which may delay the G710 release until they can top it. But that is all here say.

Good thing for G700 users is keeping it current will keep the value up a little longer.

@Ritocop @erock9174 They offered to send them back. However, I had been kind of debating if I was "good" enough to hit the i500 after I purchased. I now know that I swing a little shallow so a smaller sole does tend to work better for me or go for the flatter, sweeper soles of hybrids or fairways. Ultimately it was my call to keep them but I wasn't going to put it on Ping or the retailer to return a used product when they offered to make it right and I refused because I was anxious to get them out on the course.

You play two 7i ?

Is it because the 700’s are stronger lofted and a little longer ?

When I went for my fitting the G700 7i was showing 150 yds and the i200 7i 140 yds.

So I could see two 7 irons gapping right.

700s were decent. Good performance. Absolutely tragic sound and feel. G410 were a huge improvement so if they can make a 710 feel and sound more like the 410 they will have a winner.

You got it. Two 7 irons. Two different models. Perfect gapping.

I guess I’ll never understand not playing something based on sound if it performs.

After Eye 2's, anything would have been rocket launchers.

From what I understand, the G700 will be revamped (not known at this time by how much) and we might see more info in October. Also, i500's seem to be destined to just disappear after this year. When I asked about them, the response was, "that's a good question." Depending on what they do with the G700, the i500's don't seem to fit into the matrix.

The g710 May be a progressive set. Similar to the 0211. That way they can do away with the i500s, and make the longer irons more pre g700 and the shorter more i500. Most people were comboing the sets so this makes sense to me.
