Clubface Open, but when square looks really closed

Is there any way to set up properly so that the clubface is square and doesn’t look closed? I’m hitting pushes because of how open my clubface is. But it honestly looks square in my mind.

I set the clubface square today and man oh man did it seem dead shut.

A buddy of my taught me this trick. Take some double stick tape and then put a tee into the tape. Then stick the tee with the tape onto the face of your club. The tee will show you whether you are open or closed and give you an idea of what square might be. For me, I keep my left arm straight to the club so square club face for me using the tee trick actually looks slightly closed. Try it out and see if it helps you.

Stick your butt out and get your triceps at least feeling like they are in front of your chest, with your shoulder tips in front of your center of gravity. Now pull the handle across your toes with the butt of the handle facing the target, and see how far behind your hands the clubhead is....but now you’re almost at the end of your shoulder turn, so your hands slow down and the clubhead comes thru. Try 3 to 9 thinking about that, at good pace with a fairly hard stop to the backswing, and a weight transfer started before you uncoil going forward. With an 8i, pull straight across your toes, feel like your back shoulder is pushing hard to the target. Very loose hands, passing close to the body in the space created by sticking out the butt. Aim for max speed 1 foot past the ball

Your grip may end up even stronger than current but will feel looser. Now you might be a little steep, and will really be trapping the ball back of middle of your stance, more like a trap draw, but you should be able to feel the power and that strengthening your grip from there will REALLY draw it, but stand up a wee bit and weaken grip a touch but do the rest the same should straighten or fade.

Change aim point, and the tilt of your upper body, depending on length of club and intended shot.

Ramblings from a hack amateur, who fixed my version of your problem this way. I take address feeling but not looking stooped over, it a lot like Phil I think.

this is also a great way to visualize how far your club is pointed one direction or another when the ball is above or below your feet.

I used to be like that. Just have to keep setting it up in the square position for a few thousand times and it will look right. Inside: with the club in the air, line up the face with a door jam or edge of counter so that it is square the edge and then lower it into the address position. I also stopped resting the club on the ground behind the ball and taking my grip. I now take my grip before I place the club behind the ball. There is a reason almost every golf professional does it this way and it only took me 30 years to figure that out.

There’s another great drill that Shawn Clement Does on his website. He’ll set up to hit a draw or he may try to hit it straight, but he will close the club face slightly and then at address make a move to get behind the ball, then the club face is square to the target line, makes a swing he’ll get that draw affect, if it does draw fine, if it goes straight, depending how much you were wanting to drawl the ball, but it helps getting behind the ball which is where you have to be to hit a solid shot
