Sunglasses Recommendation

Recommended Posts

Looking for a little help in the sunglasses department. I like to wear sunglasses when on the course but not a big fan of wearing them while hitting a shot. Sometimes I keep them on but the majority of the time I put them on the back of my hat. I have a pair of Oakley Flak Jackets which are great for that purpose but Iā€™m not a big fan of the sports style sunglasses. I have a pair of Maui Jims that I love and wear daily but they do not hold snug on the hat and will fly off when I hit a shot whether I put them on the front or back of my hat. Same thing with my Oakley Holbrooks and Frogskins. I am looking for something with a more trendy look (think Wayfarers or Frogskins) that will hold tight on my hat while taking violent cuts at the driver. Prefer Maui Jim or Ray Ban but would also consider Oakley or Costa. Any recommendations out there???

I like sunglasses and have several pair for different occasions but for golf, in my opinion, the Costa Polarized 580 Blue Mirror lens can't be beat. I wear them for fishing/golf/any outdoor activity. Excellent clarity it almost seems like everything is "sharper". For everyday wear, I go with the RayBan Wayfarer grey lens and there is a stark difference in the crispness (for lack of a better word) between the two.

I tried the new golf lenses from Oakley and personally I was not a fan. After a few minutes they really made my eyes hurt and from reviews I read a lot of people shared a similar experience, although some claim to have switched to the darker version lense and liked it. Iā€™m the same way with my sunglasses I wear them until Iā€™m ready to swing then flip them on top of my head. Something throws off my depth perception when I look down at a ball with sunglasses on. Although they didnā€™t alleviate my problem when looking down at the ball, Costas & Maui Jimā€™s are fantastic everyday sunglasses.

I have a pair of Smith but the lenses are shot after a year. Perfectly clean but have ripples running through them which makes light look like it is coming through a prism.

5 pairs of Smith only had one issue and they credited me back for another pair. They fought the claim at first, I called asked them nicely to revisit my claim. The lens coating bubbled up and rubbed off when I wiped them down thinking it was a spot or something. Anyway, it was a couple year old pair, they discontinued the style, gave me $160 for a new pair. Paid in full for a newer, Chromapop pair.

Ā

I suggest bronze or copper for golf btw. I never take mine off when golfing. Base wrap 8, so very close to Costa style fit. Wonderful lenses, especially Chromapop, but their glass lenses are pretty nice as well. Have those in a copper mirror that's polarized and photochromic. Baller.

Costa Jose's with 580G Blue Lenses. I wear them any time I'm outside and it's not dark. Working in a shipyard, there's no glare off the water with them, no change in depth perception when playing golf, all around great pair of sunglasses. Find a pair of Costas that fit your face and never look back.

Take a look at REKS.

Ā

Mine are prescription, so I wear them all the time, but they are great glasses at a fraction of the cost of Oakleys. I'd worn Oakleys for many years, but got tired of paying a small fortune every time I needed a new pair, and decided to give REKS a try. The optical quality is great, they are guaranteed unbreakable, terrific customer service, and you don't need a home equity line to buy them.

  • 3 weeks later...

I wore Oakley Flak Jackets with rose Prizm lenses for quite a few years, but when i moved to SoCal they were not dark enough for the bright sunshine. I'm now wearing Electric California Knoxville Pro with rose lenses. Quite a bit more glare protection. They're like a larger version of Wayfarers, but they stay on my head without jumping around when I swing. They also work well for driving and other general use.

Damn those Targetlines look pretty good. They come out with a darker lens that has worked well while playing? The golf lens I have in the Flak doesn't feel very natural to me.

Targetline's would fit the bill. I didn't like my Flak's due to how they sat on my face so I tried a pair of Targetline's and love them. They are snug on my hat no problem. Although I will say, the lens was quite a bit bigger than I expected in person. I have a pretty good sized noggin and the lens certainly fills up my face moreso than say your traditional Wayfarer style.

Thats good I also have a large head and bigger sunglasses look more normal on me. I think I'm gonna go pick some up this week. Did you try the darker golf lens? I hadn't see that one yet.

Ā

I have the darker PRIZM lens. Overall theyā€™re great, the only time I had an issue tracking the ball was when there was overcast. The grey clouds made it hard to see the ball

Ā

Theyā€™re definitely big shades but they feel and fit great

Yea I got the Prizm Dark Golf, much better in bright sun compared to my Flak's that were the regular Prizm lens. A true dark lens is still better than the Prizm Golf Dark, but it's a pretty decent step up from the previous one. I got mine super cheap from Joma Shop but they don't have any on there any more. Unless you are playing somewhere super bright I think you'd be happy with the Dark Golf.

Did you go with the HD polycarbonate lens, or the HD Trivex?

Both. I wear prescription lenses, so I got a pair with the Trivex golf lens, and then a second pair with photochromatic lenses for cloudy days. I was uncertain when the photochromatic pair came as to whether they would lighten up enough from really dark conditions; they assured me that if there was a problem, we'd try other stuff until we got it right. Happily, that hasn't been necessary.

Ā

So I got both pairs with prescription lenses, one photochromatic, for well under what ONE pair of Oakleys would have cost.
