Torrey Pines South Current Condition

I'll be in town from Michigan 2nd week of September. Never played golf in Southern California. I do not know when I'll have the opportunity to come back. Is it worth it to play the South course currently? I heard it's under construction. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I wouldn't recommend it for the price (~$200+) for only 14 holes. The North is a better option but they just aerated last week.

Close alternatives would be Balboa* and Coronado, you could play both for ~$60 each. Poa greens in great condition right now. Awesome views on both courses right near downtown/airport.

I just played the North and South Courses last week and the South is pretty Tore up right now. Tractors all over the place, it’s kind of a big mess really. I believe there were 2 shortened holes and 2 holes closed? It’s definitely a let down, but the views are great and it was my first time so I still had a blast.

I’d say if you have the means and you’re ok with not playing the full course, go for it, otherwise it’s probably better to wait for a better experience.

Thanks for the feedback. IDK when i'll be back in San Diego (if ever) so I'm going to take this opportunity to play as many of the courses as I can. Current plan is TP South on 9/11 for twilight, TP North on 9/12, Balboa Park and Coronado Friday. Sucks about the construction and the aeration but I'll make do.

TP Mens club is running an event on the 15th, and the word is that all 18 holes will be open in time for that event. No word exactly when they're opening all the holes, but there's a chance!

I just spoke to several locals this past few days and they all said if you're out of town to avoid it. Not worth paying with the conditions it's in now.

I'm in the same boat as you and will be coming in early November. Sometimes you just have to go for it - I respect that!

I played this morning. They just started overseeding so it looks brown but its actually in phenomenal shape and the greens are incredible, so fast and so pure. I you want to see some of the changes and new bunkers visit my instagram story for today. These new bunkers are really going to affect the play of the pro's this year and the new upcoming us open.

If you play Friday, let me know how it is. I’m playing Monday from out of town as well.

@mattw387 I fully plan to play on Friday. I made a tee time (3) months ago. I'll let you know how it is.

Played yesterday, greens are punched, course is over seeded and really soft. They are really watering it down, and all the tee boxes were pretty far up.

Has anyone played in the last week or so? I will be in town for Thanksgiving and would love to play TP South. Any better than bfizzy experienced 3.5 weeks ago?

just played North course and it's in fabulous shape. They hadn't cut the grass all week due to the rains here, so the rough was unusually long. They were instituting a local rule of 1 min ball searches, and free drops in the rough due to it.

This week the course ought to be playing perfect.
