Players irons with leading edge relief

Recommended Posts

Hey all, still playing the 718cb’s from the Golfwrx TPI trip a few years ago, and my irons are starting to get a little face wear to them, and I’ve got the bug for something different, maybe.

You steeper beaver pelt takers, what irons are you guys loving? Doesn’t have to be a new model, though I’ve hit the blueprints and LOVED them, just prob still need both kidney$ so they are out.

I'm also a digger. The Srixon z785s are about as good an iron as I've ever hit. They feel fantastic, are consistent and long for their class, and look good enough at address. But, the best feature is the leading edge grind. The v-sole is super solid. It turned my divots into smooth, even rub marks in the turf. Super consistent in the dirt. What's even more surprising to me, though, was the directional and distance consistency that the turf interaction provided. I truly believe these are the first irons I owned that actually helped my game.

Quick note - they were unimpressive to me in the simulator. Felt clanky and ordinary. Hit them outside if you can. They come alive on the grass.

Srixon 945 or 745. Just srixon in general with the V sole. Also, callaway forged irons tend to have higher bounce than others.

But, 716 MB were some of the best turf interaction of irons I've owned. They also had the pre worn leading edge like the 718.

Good response, played the 785s the last 6 months. I was coming from mb's and defiantly noticed the vsole. Can be had for fairly good price.

I've always been a steep digger, Srixon V-Sole works so good for me. Blades for cheap? Find a set of Z945s, or just look at the Z-Blades if $$$ is not the top priority..

CBs, go for the 745s or 785s, didn't care as much for the 765s look. I have a set of Z945s in my garage with Recoil protos, loved them, but now I am now bagging the Z785s with standard Recoil F5, feel so solid, and the added forgiveness is appreciated.

Agreed, specifically the 2018 model and it was the best feeling iron that year and 2020.

The answer is Titleist 962b, although I may be just a bit biased??

Callaway 2013 X-Forged would also be an outstanding choice.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the testers for the Hogan PTx Pro irons, and I really enjoy the V Sole on them. I tend to dig with my irons, and I've had no issues with them at all. A couple of buddies have the Srixon 785s, and they really like the V sole on them as well.

The ptx blacks have been high on my radar for awhile especially the black finish, I used to play a set of gunmetal Mac Gregor pro cm that I miss so much. Also had quad dot conforming Cally protos that worked great, should have kept them too lol.

I was fit for the 718cb’s that I’ve been playing since pre-release so I’ve hit the whole Titleist line and it was clear that the cb had the best sole for me.

The PTx Blacks are sweet looking. I might get a set at some point in the future. I think a combo of the PTx and Ft. Worth irons would be a great set.

My two favorites recently have been z785 and the irons in my bag currently, Bridgestone tour b cb. Very similar look and feel between the two. Bridgestones are very underrated irons but they perform as good as anything I’ve ever hit. I still want a set of z785’s though. They look amazing!

Just order your clubs longer and flatter, then you can play anything. That’s what I ended up doing in order to play mizunos and it’s actually improved my swing.

When I spotted the title of this thread I was coming in to say 718 cb. I messed around with a set of x forged some this summer and I sold them. For me the cb was better and I think it was the sole design. I got almost identical numbers off a mat on simulator but when I got on the course there was just something with the x forged that didn’t work as well. If I had not owned the cb I would have most likely thought the x forged was ok. Played this last week in wet conditions and the cb was a joy but you obviously already know that. I did hit the new cb and it was good. I liked the look of the 718 better but for basically everything else I couldn’t tell much difference. Maybe a little less click at impact the 718 felt faster if that makes any sense. The 620 was a little smaller. I only hit the 7 iron. I didn’t hit the t100 but I did give it a look. From looks alone I want to get back to the shop and give it a serious try.

I have to preface by saying I have not hit many new irons over the past couple years. However, one of the things I was looking for when I tried about 25 different irons a few years back was how they performed in a variety of conditions. For me at the time, the MB2s shocked me with how much better they played in very soft conditions than the other irons I was able to try. That was a major selling point for me, and the one major area of upgrade over players irons from the past...

So do i and i didn't care for em. The sole was really wide and bounced very hard off firm turf. This is also why they dont feel that great off certain mats too.

Sole is much narrower on the blades 945, 965, and Z forged. The V sole just plays like extra camber in these and if you have shaft lean, it isn't a huge deal compared to other irons with similar sole width, but it's noticeable.

I agree with you on the 745, 765 the sole is a little wider than some players forged CB irons and could see how it might get in the way in really firm conditions for some people. 785 soles seem to be slimmed a bit, though.
