Callaway Jaws MD5 wedges: 56, 58-degree in-hand looks

I heard that they’re going to offer a low bounce W grind in the MD5’s. I hope that’s true.

Yes, they have two different W grinds listed on the Cally website.

Agree. That 115 gram shaft with the Cally head is awful. Can't even feel it. I had a set of MD4's and replaced the shafts with PX LZ 6.0's which were much better.

I am a Modus 125 wedge guy and I actually don’t mind the 115 callaway is using. It’s in my 50* MD4 and feels better than the S200/wedge flex shafts I’ve used in other wedges for some reason. I do wish they’d lose the “tour issue” labels as there’s really nothing tour issue about them, and the matchy matchy colors is lame too.

If it’s the same as the Apex Smoke and PM Grind, then it’s PVD. So it’s not the most durable coating out there but better than black oxide and black nickel but not as durable as a diamonized.

Difference in the Tour Issue DG is the weight sorting process, it’s much tighter tolerances on TI. Standard DG (non tour issue) has a +\- tolerance of 2 grams where TI is +\- .50.

I'm fully aware, I just doubt that's actually happening on a wedge shaft that's being offered in this specific Callaway club given that the label is color-coded for that line. It's like a "made-for" shaft basically and just seems cheesy.

Yep, agreed. I’ve been told by a local fitter that the only true “tour issue” DG that meets the .50 tolerance are the S400 and X100. Anything else that says tour issue that’s S200/S300 flex is like you said just a “made for” shaft and isn’t subject to same tolerances. Not to get off topic but that’s why I’m exited to try the Mizuno T20 wedges, stock shaft is the TI S400

I think I've seen sets of tour issue s300 in the Japanese market, and I want to say I've even seen them in tour bags (Luke Donald comes to mind for some reason) so that's interesting. Good on Mizuno as I'm a huge fan of their wedges except when they were using the DG Spinner shaft for a couple model iterations. Cleveland did the same with the RTX4 using a tour issue S400 so it's a trend that I hope continues especially with the price of wedges these days.

I think the point we’re trying to make it that the whole “tour issue” in an S200 flex is smoking mirrors. S200 is fine but the difference between a true TI S400 is you know what you’re getting due to the tight weight sorting tolerances.

As to the dark finish, I don't know if its the same as the MD3, but I have MD3's as PW & GW and the finish has really held up well. Lot of camber in that sole. Reminiscent of the original release of the MD2's.

A lot more than a few grams, completely different profile shaft. This is a “made for” shaft Callaway is using and it’s a 115 gram S200 flex so technically it’s a lightweight alternative wedge shaft. These shafts aren’t weight sorted so you never know what you’re getting off the rack, the raw weight of that shaft is subject to a 2 gram tolerance up and down. On an S400 TI, it’s just subject to more precise quality control so every s400 wedge shaft is 134 grams raw within .50 grams up or down. Generally a lighter weight and flex wedge shaft works best if you use lighter weight shafts in your iron setup (105 grams or less) - makes it a seamless transition. This 115 gram S200 flex is a mid trajectory mid spin, S400 is a low trajectory low spin.

New wedges always spin like crazy. Thats how they get you. You feel like a tour wedge god. Then, when you have 40 yards in to a pin that is in the front and you want that little nipper, they let you down....
