You have so much more flexibility in photography these days. Digital has changed everything.

Film prices were going up a lot before the digital era due to silver content.

In the '70's and early '80's I was into it, not as a pro but amateur. Had the darkroom, Durst enlarger, Mamiya Twin Lens Reflex, two Nikons (F2 Photomic and Nikkormat) and decent assortment of lenses. When I was in the military I had some great shots, but not having a darkroom and creative control sort of killed it for me.

Had a full Nikon kit years back. D700 24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4 and a fisheye. Got tired of lugging everything around and ended up leaving it at home most of the time. Bought a gen 1 Sony RX1r and sold everything. Absolutely loved the freedom of a small fixed 35mm and the lens/sensor combo was amazing. Focus was something left to be desired though. Added a Leica Q a couple years ago and have enjoyed it but the 28mm focal length is not my favourite. I thought it would have scratched the itch for a Leica M system but it hasnt. Played around with an older M9 a couple weeks ago for a weekend. Found it challenging but rewarding when nailing the focus. I guess its like puring a blade.

Used to have a D7000 with a couple of lenses on it but have long since given it up. Only carry the Sony RX100 VI now. I've upgraded twice since the RX series first came out but it will do 99% of what I need. Actually found on my trip to Italy in the Spring that my S10+ takes pictures - for print purposes - that really surprised me. Found that for the last week I didnt even carry a camera.

Great pictures are only as good as the camera you carry with you all the time - and one you are comfortable with/have practiced with. Its why I think the high end point and shoots like the RX are becoming so popular. I can carry it in my back pocket on golf trips, play entire rounds with it in my back pocket and not even notice it. But then when my group is playing, its super easy to take out. For most travel pics, I think the point and shoots will do you just fine - although the pro level cameras certainly arent cheap.

And for prints/online - cameras like the S10+ and I'm guessing the newer iphones have in incredible amount of pro level setting options.

This is one of my favorite all time pics from my trip to Africa. We had been watching a family of lions for an entire morning when their cubs popped out of the grass only a few yards away. It was just one of those breathtaking moments that you sort of shoot and pray.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have all kit stuff that I bought in 2011 - a Canon T2i with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 55-250mm f/4-5.6. I've definitely gotten some good pictures with it, but nothing with the sharpness that I'd really desire. I also ended up spending a measly $120 for the 50mm f/1.8 which is actually a TON of fun to use.

I haven't used it much over the last 5-6 years because my iMac is so gummed up with photos and other memory-hogging programs that photo editing is a serious chore that takes an unreal amount of time to complete. I'm sure to be more active with my photography when I replace it with something new.

Incredible pics so far, mine won't be, lol, but got into photography with birth of first daughter and hooked ever since.

Nikon D3300 DSLR, a few decent lenses are go to for most stuff outdoors and the like. But a couple years ago picked up a Fuji X100F - it's amazing for people, "street" - still learning it. A couple of images from Scotland last year with lenses on the Nikon, and a nice one I like from this year's trip with the Fuji which was perfect while sitting in the front row of a concert at Fringe By The Sea one evening in North Berwick. Old Blind Dogs is an incredible band live.
